Had a nice ride at a moderate pace. Only 18 miles, but it was what I needed.

I love being slightly dehydrated. Have not been dehydrated in a very long time.

Seems as long as I don’t use strength or hammer I could cruise indefinitely. Yard work has proven this to be true, but any real exertion and I’m finished/done.

I’m a bit zoned out by the exercise. Kinda mucho relaxed. There was also a delay with the muscle tiredness in my legs.

I feel I did just the right amount of exercise.

I brought down my amp collection (6 amps) and plugged in. Used the guitar named “Worm” because it only has one pickup as a baseline reference. “Maggie” is with her daughter (the Creature) and the granddaughter for an all girl night out. I’m not wasting the opportunity…

An easy dinner: a chicken cutlet sandwich. I grilled the chicken last night with the pork chops. EZ-PZ…

Today radiation treatment went smoothly. This is usual in the beginning of the week.

I left the house early because I could feel the urge building and most of the time a technologist awaits my arrival, and generally I arrive early and get accommodated. Today was no different and it minimized the difficulty of sitting and driving under duress of bladder pressure.

Even if I had to wait, siting/driving, time is not my friend.

Imagine after treatment that I have to pee 5 times in 40 minutes. I definately am overhydrated…

Tomorrow “Maggie” wants to hit the gym. Her physical therapist mentioned to her that strength is the key to longevity. She is embracing strength training… I will just pump blood using the elyptical

Meanwhile the fem-out is happening and I am loosing strength. I still have tone, but the bulk is disappearing.

Yesterday I made the most of being a bachelor for a day. Playing the amp is as important as playing the guitar. I own six amps and they all offer a different sound and response.

The 1960 Fender brown Super with two ten inch speakers and 35 watts has a loose feel and is not tight as the 1996 and 1997 Matchless amps.

The Matchless Spitfire favors Telecasters, while the Matchless Lightning favors my Strat making use of the added gain. The Lightning also has this “swell” in the decay that is very musical.

The Victoria Regal I have set up as a Fender Deluxe with NOS tubes. It features a high powered 15 inch speaker and has an overbuild that makes for thick sound, lots of grunt and thud, and the vintage RCA 6V6’s have a compressed top end that makes this amp very much a blues amp on steroids.

I brought down these amps from my upstairs studio to enjoy the comfort of the mini-split central AC we have on the first floor. Pretty much what I have is treasures that I accumulated over time. Now they have become hard assets.

I bought/collected the Matchless amps beginning in 2006, and they date back to 1996-1997. Today these amps have appreciated to more than 4 times the price I paid, and know I own the rarer 2x10 versions that are no longer made. That option was discontinued about a decade ago.

Maggie still has physical therapy later this afternoon. Getting old is like a full-time job. LOL.

9:50 AM and finally coffee.

Later today we will hit the gym. I’ll do the elliptical to gain a sweat.

Blood Pressure at 9:55 is 122/82. I’m overhydrated still…

New York’s climate has changed into a more tropical climate. I wonder if we will have another snowless winter?

I feel the fatigue accumulating from the drugs and radiation treatments. I am told that my side effects are minimal, and I wonder how some people suffer bad side effects.

I can visually see changes as the fem-out takes hold. My body hair is balding and even my facial hair is becoming scant. My skin is getting smoother, and has a healthy glow. I noticed my arms are getting slimmer and are loosing bulk.

I think the worse side effect is the fatigue…

The FED is in a big bind. Both inflation and deflation are high risk. Heads or tails both are losers.

The housing market suffered the smallest gain in years. Seems like this part of the economy is almost stalling.

Meanwhile the market indexes are making higher highs and all the risk and all the headwinds seem disregarded or discounted. I say we are in a big bubble, and in the future the shoe will drop.

The Baby-Victorian has 40 windows. As Snarky Joe pointed out, back in 1912 there was no air conditioning. We added a 2-zone mini-split that effectively is like central AC for the first floor. We consider the mini-split “life-support.”

In Europe there are cities that do not have AC. Know that in Europe global warming involves suffering.

They say this heat dome will dissipate starting Thursday, but thunderstorms and severe flooding is likely.

35 minutes on the elliptical did good for an old man.

Somehow “Maggie’s” free membership got cancelled, but mine is still good.

Of course she is upset, even though she says she will use the rowing machine, go on long walks at Blue Mountain Preserve, and use her trampoline.

Anyways makes no sense to me why she wants to know why her membership got cancelled. Kinda moot why the membership got cancelled if you don’t intend on using it.

Cal

I'm getting antsy. This weather has me cooped up inside, quickly scooting from one air conditioned space to another. We have a cold front moving through Thursday evening which will drop the daytime highs by an estimated 15 degrees. If it's cool enough I think on Thursday night I'm going to load up the Minolta Autocord, and maybe a Leotax, with some 3200 film, then go on walkabout. If not Thursday then definitely Friday night. During this heat wave, our night time low temperatures this week are warmer than the upper level of the hottest temperature I want to experience. Add to that the diurnal humidity increase and we've got 83 degrees with 94% humidity. Absolutely miserable. All work and no play make Phil a dull boy.

I had a delayed full bladder due to the sweating and exercise I did yesterday. I was not dehydrated, but less overhydrated than usual. Next time after a workout day I will start my drinking 15 minutes earlier to compensate.

The next patient took my spot…

It seems I’m doing well with the radiation treatment with very few side effects. No bleeding, incontenence or dia-REAR.

I am starting using a natural laxative to help inhibit all the mini and micro pooping that goes on throughout the day that is annoying. I want to be one and done.

I’m grilling corn to have in a bean salad tonight with chicken.

Seems eating 4 small meals helps fight the fatigue.

I learned that most of the side effects I’m experiencing are from the Inhibitor and the steroid which still are building up. They say it takes 6 months for my body to stabilize and make the adjustment of these drugs. I’m about 6 months if you use the injection that I call the chemical castration as the start, but only 4 months if you use when I began using the Inhibitor and steroid as the start.

So soon I will be stabilizing and getting accustom to these drugs which overall I am able to manage. The thing to remember though is that I will be on these drugs for 2 years and then it takes a year to a year and a half to have these drugs clear my body.

The PSA is used to monitor my Cancer, but because these drugs suppress testosterone production it really wound be a reliable indicator if I am Cancer free until a year to year and a half passes after I stop or one therapy.

The period of prolonged weakness will exist for a while…

I’m with Phil. This heat wave and global warming has some bad health consequences. More isolation, suffering, and lack of exercise, besides mental health consequences like not being outdoors or in nature.

We must adapt and cope. I will be using the free gym membership to avoid the heat.

When we were down in North Carolina, we saw how the hot climate promoted weight gain and obesity. Almost everyone was supersized in a very bad way that was unhealthy and it was a breeding ground for chronic diseases.

Today on my weekly check-in after receiving radiation treatment, my weigh-in was 158.0 pounds This also includes a lot of water because at that time I still was overhydrated. I figure easily at least a pound (16 ounces) of excess water I was carrying if not a quart (32 ounces).

I used a 25% off coupon to buy a digital scale at CVS to more accurately track my weight.

Anyways seems like so far my weight is stable. Weight gain is a common side effect.

My thinking is that the heat is weakening the general public. They feel less energy, so the side effect of global warming is not so different that the loss of energy level and fatigue I experience from hormone treatment.

Cal

4:05 PM and my body has had time to eliminate the excess water, and I weighed myself on the new digital scale I bought at CVS using a 25% off coupon: 156.8 pounds.

Know that I suffer the side effect of bloating, so I appear to have belly fat as if I were a beer drinker.

Pretty close to being a skinny bitch again.

Cal

Cal you aren’t even close to being a skinny bitch. My digital scale read 125.4 lbs this morning and I’m 5’ 8”. At least it’s up a little from January when I bottomed out at 122. The consequences of having to loose a lot of gut to get rid of my tumour. When you were getting your scans I was getting my own. There was a concern that the pancreas was not making enough enzymes but fortunately that was ruled out.

I eat as much good quality food as possible and add protein supplements for a little bit extra. I’m omnivorous but try to avoid excess animal fat as cholesterol was getting elevated. Fortunately Vancouver Island is a good place for seafood. A big problem for me is keeping warm when temperatures drop. With no body fat to burn and use for insulation it’s a good thing I live in the mildest part of Canada. After reading of your experience with electric vests I got one. 🙂

Took the bike to town for shopping this morning, needed food and another spray can of wasp stuff. The bugs built a nest in my car port and the previous spraying didn’t finish the job. Grrrrrrrr! Four stings.

Better get back to work in the garden, the two fig trees have decided to have a bumper crop this year more than I can use but easily given away. The farm markets usually ask a dollar each and have no problem getting it.

Glen,

I understand that Vancouver Island has a Mediterranean like climate. I’m pretty jealous. Right now New York with it’s tropical temperatures and tropical humidity is a living hell.

“Maggie” and I are thinking of next year going bonkers with the garden. First off we need a greenhouse to start seedlings and get a jump on our zone 7a growing season. Understand that our back-backyard has a perfect southern exposure.

Outdoor Living Today offers an 8X16 greenhouse with raised beds that I think we will buy. They are located in British Columbia. Paid Trump tariffs on Canadian wood products during the first term on the two cedar sheds from OLT.

Oddly our plants are lagging this year. Tomatoes are only now generating ripe fruit.

As far as my weight goes right around 148-150 pounds I resemble a light welterweight boxer. Fitness and strength are kinda important to me for self defense. Understand I grew up during the Vietnam era, and pretty much my family did not really belong in a Lilly white suburb.

On my report card was a report of me fighting on the bus from my kindergarden teacher. By third grade I was a good fighter. Trial by fire. Although I was always kinda small and light in weight I had the three best things to win in a fight: speed; agility, and experience.

I avoided fights, but when I flipped the switch things got crazy. Sadly I fought to hurt and win.

In today’s world I don’t want to feel vulnerable.

I am glad you are otherwise doing well.

For greenhouses these people are in Eastern Canada, and shipping might be easier/cheaper.

I’ve got an 8x16 greenhouse that’s made in England. It has an aluminum frame with glass panes and gets mainly used for peppers and tomatoes during summer and storage for vulnerable plants during winter. It really is a Mediterranean climate here, but we usually get some freezing temperatures and snow every winter. Walking to the corner store I pass about a dozen palm trees, some higher than the houses. They’re called windmill palms but don’t produce anything edible. It’s not uncommon to see banana trees around here but the season is too short for them to produce fruit.

Have had to line the bottom two feet of chain link fence with chicken wire to keep bunnies out. The little buggers will mow down a row of peas or asparagus with abandon. The e-fence keeps the raccoons out without harming them and ensures I get the figs and the branches aren’t broken off. It’s pretty discouraging to come out in the morning to find your prized fig tree destroyed and a bite out of each fig looking for the ripest one. Must confess to giving thought to a hat such as Mr Crockett would wear.

This year rabbits, chipmunks, and birds ate all our blue berries, raspberries, and strawberries.

Been thinking of fencing in the garden. Last year the rabbits ate the string beans and peas, the entire plants. Something ate a head of lettuce also.

My cyclotron was developed by the Canadian National lab and was made by EBCO, now Advanced Cyclotron in Vancouver. This is how I learned about Vancouver Island.

When in L.A. International Airport waiting for a connecting plane, I heard someone call my name. It was Tabe from Vancouver, a EBCO field engineer. The world is not so big.

I am from the Mediterranean and aside of ancient civilizations, there is a heck of a great combination there for a fantastic lifestyle. But with climate change the summers aren't no good anymore.
I still find funny and stupid why the question of "How come you are not vacationing in Spain this summer?" comes up to me so often. We have had about 10 days with 30C/86F peaks here in Sweden and it feels hot enough. Borderline tropical some days as well. That the heat moves north as well as having the long days is one factor why I stay and vacation out of summer elsewhere. Then, travel is messy, crowded and expensive in high seasons and back home it's overtouristed.
I’m with Phil. This heat wave and global warming has some bad health consequences. More isolation, suffering, and lack of exercise, besides mental health consequences like not being outdoors or in nature.
Summers also are some inverse winters. Here up north winters are dark and sometimes harsh, but seeing much less brutal snowing and TBH I think the US midwest gets worse winter weather than here. But as of that, it's so hot in sourthern latitudes that people cannot go out!
My community darkroom is great in that it keeps mild temps year round, however during the last heatwave I did enjoy being outdoors. While extreme for here, those 86F are nothing much compared to other places. Some rains and variability are bac again so I will pick up indoors photo activities again.

If it's cool enough I think on Thursday night I'm going to load up the Minolta Autocord, and maybe a Leotax, with some 3200 film, then go on walkabout. If not Thursday then definitely Friday night.
I found myself having ramped up film shooting quite a bit (as I posted in Jason's article). Had gotten a heap cheap good 6x6's with Tessar types that I have yet to test. Methinks I will just lend at least one to a kid that joined our photoclub. Am having a honeymoon phase with a Pentax 645n, unapologetically enjoying the automation and bearing the workout.

Snarky Joe says I’m stuck in the past. Certainly there is a great amount of truth to this because I honor history, and certainly I am retro. Another part of me though is rather progressive, and I’m somehow always moving forward.

I looked at the link that Glen supplied. The greenhouses seem like a great value and well engineered. The designs are kinda modern, made of extruded aluminum and polycarbonate. The 10 foot wide version is appealing over the 8 foot versions. Pretty much a real greenhouse.

Outdoor Living Today uses a lot of cedar and intergrated into the design are raised beds shaped like a U. There is a rustic quality that is less modern that I find appealing. Understand that the Baby-Victorian is a 1912 Craftsman style home, and the local is pretty much the “Gateway” to the Hudson Highlands.

Ascetically the OLT greenhouse matches the two sheds we already have.

Separately the Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a warm fall that is drier than usual. I can see that water is becoming an important resource, and I have to consider collecting rainwater, and drip irrigation. Oddly global warming and climate change has made New York both more humid and more arid.

The receptionist mentioned that it isn’t even August first and autum leaves are falling. In my garden I see my plants are stressed. The 5 year pattern displays the trend of severe rain when it happens, more violent storms, and more sporadic rain besides the increase in temperatures.

My worry is that NYC is in trouble with global warming. At a point it will become unlivable.

Today I await a delivery of another month’s supply of inhibitor. This is a drug that has a cost of $30K annually. Because “Maggie” and I are not married my out of pocket costs for this drug are covered because my retirement income is modest. Financial aid covers all of my out of pocket costs. Next year I have to reapply. I hope I do not loose this benefit.

This laxative is literally saving my ass. I took a dose yesterday afternoon and today it seems I am “one and done” instead of mini and micro pooping all day. I feel normalized…

Tomorrow August 1st will be my 19th radiation treatment, only 20 more to go, so pretty much I’m at the cusp of the halfway point.

For Phil and I the extended warmth expected in the fall along with the dry weather means this will be a good large envelope to exploit to do mucho biking. I’m looking forward to perhaps an extended long fall to make up for the horrible heat of the hellish summer.

September for me means no more radiation treatments, and pretty much I get my life back. By then my body should be fully acclimated to the Inhibitor and steroid that have weakened me. Literally I’m about half-strength, and I have to go at a measured pace of an old man.

I don’t think I’m far off in assessment. Did an 9 mile out and back for a total of 18 miles with Chris who is nearly a 75 year old man. That ride was kinda just what I needed.

I am learning the discipline of pacing myself and living within my limitations. I am looking forward to the end of hormone treatment, and hopefully my testosterone returns (30% chance that the fem-out will be permanent), but it will still take a year to year and a half to normalize after I terminate inhibitor and steroid use.

My gardening I see has to evolve and adapt to cope with climate change. At this point the mini-split that provides central AC to our first floor is “life-support.” Heat, humidity, and severe weather will kill many people. Brace yourself…

156.2 pounds this morning upon wakeup after a rehydration. Joe V taught me about water loss due to respiration when sleeping.

So I am not very far above the 155.0 pound threshold to be a skinny bitch again, but when I look in the mirror I see the side effect of bloating from the hormone treatment. Also I visually see the loss of muscle mass that is another side effect of the few-out.

At this point it is an oh-well. At least I don’t have the side effect of weight gain.

BTW some men grow breasts. So far this is not happening to me. I think this happens to men that are overweight.
