New York NYC March Meet-Up

Was not home to sign for the package, so delivery is tomorrow when I'll be at home waiting. Anyways getting it today was an early delivery. Oh-well.

"In today's episode of "This Old Man" Calvin orders a F5 "E" screen and begins monsterizing yet another camera......"

Cal, truly inspired riff on "This Old House". Anxiously awaiting your next episode.

Cal

I hate when that happens, usual in my case I'm home the wrong day.
I kinda finished the rolleiflex 3.5F model 2, I loaded it with film yesterday
and it was a great clear day outside so shooting I went, shot 10 pictures
(I hope).

Pete,

"In today's episode of "This Old Man" Cal is not so stressed out after taking off a day from work for a Friday delivery that ended up being a Fed-EX no show. Basically the deliveryman on Friday left a door tag, but never rang the bell, and on Saturday in bitter wind chill Cal had to go to a foresaken part of the South Bronx (Port Morris) to pick up his parcel.

"This task enforced cancellation of an appointment with a CPA do do his taxes which had to be rescheduled. Cal was mighty pissed, but this is what you get when you live in a Third World part of NYC, even if it is in Madhattan.

"So Cal are you in a better mood today, or do you still feel like killing people?"

"Thanks for asking Norm. I fell mucho happy today. In fact I am very happy with my new lens. Sure is mucho big. At the NYC Meet-Up people were amazed at the size and weight. The knickname "Porker" for the lens is appropiate."

"So what do you think of the lens?"

"Well the lens works really well, but shooting and holding such a big and heavy lens requires a bit of engineering skill, I found that the farther I kept my hands apart the steadier I could hold the camera. I did some target shooting of my signature on a framed print in my living room from about 10-11 feet away. First off I found that I could get sharper shots by shooting vertically and I took note that I held more of the nose of the lens. When I did this on horizontal shooting the sharpness improved."

"So what is the good, the bad, and the ugly?"

"The good is in use I primarily use AFS, 40 focus points that overlay the image (they lay as a grid of crosses across the image), and I use the joystick to select my focus point. Boy is this faster than having to reframe like in a rangefinder.

"When the AF kicks in one gets a green rectangle when the focus locks and then the other 39 unused focus points disappear. Anyways this system of focus indication works really well and is a clever design. Anyways I will say those German engineers at Leica are mighty clever. Know that I use spot metering and the metering spot coincides with my single point focus which I find as being an asset. Again those Germans at Leica are mighty clever, but I say it this time to annoy people.

"So the bad and ugly is that inadvertantly Leica supplies a free gym membership with every "native SL" lens they sell. My 50 Lux-SL is only about a half inch shorter than the massive 24-90 SL zoom, and is only a meager 2.6 ounces lighter.

"But you gotta know that this lens really makes the SL a mighty fast shooter. The AF I found to be really accurate shooting indoors with only diffused filtered outdoor lighting, but the limitation is some hunting if your area of focus is not have edges of high contrast. Expect over smooth contours that lack edges and defined contrast for focus hunting to occur. The same would happen on my D3X BTW."

"So what have you done to annoy people lately, which seems to be your trademark?"

"Well the easiest thing to annoy people it seems is to buy this or any of the Leica "Native SL" lenses. It seems that there are Leica haters and people that have Leica envy will start calling you all kinds of names, and then they will tell you how to better spend your money. Anyways no sense in arguing with those people unless you are me, a person that annoys people. LOL.

'So at the Sunday Meet-Up I mount the E-Norm-mus hood reversed on the lens, as the Leica engineers designed it, and it kinda turned Pro-Mone's stomach, who complained that he hates when people mount hoods that reverse in reverse. "Don't do that ever again," Pro-Mone said. Wow, was I startled by the response. I accually was not trying to be annoying. LOL.

"So if you want to read about how I annoy people, my trademark, read the 50 Lux-SL thread and some of the SL threads for "entertainment value." The threads are really amusing. LOL. If you are bored and you want to waste some time read through some of the SL threads for mucho name calling and arguing. Much better than bad TV. LOL.

"One more annoying thing is that the gigantic hood can be used for image stabilization because it adds added length and allows spreading one's hands further apart. I imagine using the hood on this big lens will upset mucho people. LOL. And you know that seems to be my trademark and what I'm famous for. LOL."

"So on a closing note, I heard that at the meet-up there was a lot of people mentioning how they used the term "mucho" in the same ghetto venacular that you seem to get away with, but for others the response received was kinda odd.

"So stay tuned for the next episode of "This Old Man" coming soon."

It was a a great meet up and great seeing everyone, Thanks Steve for the info on
Foto care might go and check it out. Cal's Leica setup and photos were great. On
a good note the Rolleiflex 3.5F I restored the pictures came out really good.

Bob,

So it is me, you and Pro-Mone that are the 3.5F "Fan-Boys."

Cal

GEAR ALERT: I should be getting my Monochrom back shortly from getting a sensor replacement. I contacted Bill the Service Manager, and my camera will be done and shipped later this week.

Pretty much a complete overhaul and a recovering also gets done. Somehow I had Leica send me a shipping label, so far there has been no cost to me.

Cal

Hey we have class Cal. These are great cameras

Pro-Mone,

I'm trying to put the positive spin on the term "Fan-Boys." What is not to like?

Because I'm a camera geek this is what us "Rollie 3.5F Fan-Boys" need to know. The "F" versions were the most improved Rollies and the last versions. Basically the only difference's between your Rollie 3.5F and my Rollie 3.5F "Whiteface" is basically the bare surround around the two lenses, and that my camera features Schnieder lenses instead of your Zeiss lenses.

The optical formulas of both Zeiss and Schnider lenses feature an added element over all the previous versions, there is the option of the 120/220 switch which use to be a valuable premium but likely no longer merits added value, the "F" versions featured "improved" (brighter) OEM screens, and the best improvement I think is the removable hood for cleaning.

Know that the 3.5's are kinda rare so it would be wise to load up on Bay 2 filters. What is really cool is how one can stack filters and how the hood has it's own bayonet mount.

IMHO the 5mm differnce in focal length is a big deal, and for street shooting not only is the 3.5 lighter and smaller, the shorter focal length is best served for street style shooting over any 2.8.

If you have a working meter it will likely remain working.

BTW I think you purchased yours at a remarkable price. Also know that the higher contrast Zeiss lenses command about a $100.00 premium over Schnieder lenses. Some argue that the Zeiss glass is sharper, but I believe the percieved additional sharpness is due to the more contrasty rendering.

As far as Fan-Boys go repeat after me: 3.5F's are the best. LOL.

Cal

Cal, that's awesome.

My Monochrom should be shipped by the end of the week I was told.

Realize that my Monochrome is just over 4 years old, and I really shot this camera a lot. Not a problem, other than the ones that everyone is aware of, and in my case the corrosion could be seen on some files in the sky. Oh-well.

So I can see shooting this camera for a decade or more. It is a primitiv camera, especially when compared to my SL, but it still is a fun and very capable camera warts and all.

I'm a retro digital "Fan-Boy." Eh-Ha.

Cal

Sorry, I missed this one. I messed my back up and was out of work a few days, and just did not want to risk it getting worse.

John, I had hoped to be able to say goodby before you left but I guess I'll see you here...

Joe

I only have a measly 3.5 MX-EVS w/ Tessar but I'll take be happy to take you the two of you 3.5Fs on a shootout anytime !

Anyways good meetup

Philippe,

This is the camera that started it all. It is because of no good Andre and his 3.5 MX-EVS that "made" me go to Adorama and buy a Rollie. This was about 8 years ago.

And it so happened I bought a Shelf Queen for $999.00 that I would later learn was a rare "Whiteface" that somehow was mispriced. I could not even get a roll of film through the camera, and almost returned it, but I did some research and discovered I found a rare camera, so I sent it off to get "Fleenored" and after a 10 week wait I got back basically what looks like a brand new camera with a Maxwell screen upgrade.

BTW I think for the spring Philly trip that will be coming soon that I will shoot the Rollie.

Something about focusing on ground glass...

Cal

I remember your Rollei. That's a nice camera. Even those are getting expensive now

Pro-Mone,

Those Tessars stopped down are amazing. I believe Bay 1 filters and hood.

Remember that Richard Avedone used Rollies to shoot fashion before he went 8x10. And Diane Arbus carried three loaded Rollies carried in a knapsack.

One time I think I didn't get arrested in LIC for trespassing because the cop asked me if my old camera worked. I was caught red handed trespassing and it seemed like I was heading for a night at Riker's, but somehow I feel the Rollie broke the ice and saved me.

Anyway my lucky camera. LOL.

Cal

John, I had hoped to be able to say goodby before you left but I guess I'll see you here...

Sorry to hear that Joe. I'm sure I'll see you in the future. When I come to the NYC area, I will certainly try to make a meet-up conform to my schedule.

I have this gap in Medium format because only shoot a Fuji 6x9 and at times it's... big. Ironically these are cheaper than many Tessar Rolleiflexes, specially since the Vivian Mayer craze.
I don't have the spare dough for it now... But eventually I'm seeing gravity towards one

The 2.8's are a number hypnosis machine. Lens wise it irks me why the double gauss of the Fuji is 5 elements so at times I wonder why I'd get a Tessar TLR. Got the bad habit of shooting at f4.5-6.3 and a well corrected lens is nice for that.

I'll have to get down to the Lomo shop and handle one of the TLR's they have there, last time I went too rushed and thought afterwards.

I doubt that the things are ever decreasing in price again with the "resurgence". Even online it's amusing how many "NY" things posted are Hipster around Brooklyn. As of LIC I recall that shot of the freeway overpass lining to the Empire State, now nicely behind a high rise.
