New York NYC March Meet-Up

I don't know if this is a sign of the "resurgence" but I was at B&H today and they were out of HC-110 . Even the sales guy at the film counter was shocked. He said he couldn't remember the last time that happened.

John , Have you been to Valparaiso yet ? Port town. Seems like an awesome place to shoot. ( Sergio Larrain , Anders Petersen etc .. )

Philippe

Yeah, I agree... I've been wandering for 10 years on my most recent journey. 😉 Maybe the move to Chile will allow me to make more sense of what I can do with my NYC photos.

Chile's gotta be a great place and a nice base. One of my classmates had his exchange there and he wandered all around the place. Of course, parents must have had quite some $ to send him down there and support all the sidetripping.

Have yet to cover SE Asia to which I have ties, but a different place is always nice, and being close to other places to which sidetrips are closer.

Cal, thanks for the hilarious second episode of "This Old Man and his SL". I followed that separate SL thread. Lots of strange animosity there.
Jsrockit, good luck for your move to Chile. Exciting.

Pro-Mone,

I'm trying to put the positive spin on the term "Fan-Boys." What is not to like?

Because I'm a camera geek this is what us "Rollie 3.5F Fan-Boys" need to know. The "F" versions were the most improved Rollies and the last versions. Basically the only difference's between your Rollie 3.5F and my Rollie 3.5F "Whiteface" is basically the bare surround around the two lenses, and that my camera features Schnieder lenses instead of your Zeiss lenses.

The optical formulas of both Zeiss and Schnider lenses feature an added element over all the previous versions, there is the option of the 120/220 switch which use to be a valuable premium but likely no longer merits added value, the "F" versions featured "improved" (brighter) OEM screens, and the best improvement I think is the removable hood for cleaning.

Know that the 3.5's are kinda rare so it would be wise to load up on Bay 2 filters. What is really cool is how one can stack filters and how the hood has it's own bayonet mount.

IMHO the 5mm differnce in focal length is a big deal, and for street shooting not only is the 3.5 lighter and smaller, the shorter focal length is best served for street style shooting over any 2.8.

If you have a working meter it will likely remain working.

BTW I think you purchased yours at a remarkable price. Also know that the higher contrast Zeiss lenses command about a $100.00 premium over Schnieder lenses. Some argue that the Zeiss glass is sharper, but I believe the percieved additional sharpness is due to the more contrasty rendering.

As far as Fan-Boys go repeat after me: 3.5F's are the best. LOL.

Cal your right they are great camera's, I had the E and while it's a nice
camera the F is extra special in all things Rollei.

I'm witchoo, guyz.
I happen to own a 3.5F too. I had to open up its shutter due to stuttering, and it purrs now. Advance mechanism next.

Any Rolleiflex makes a wonderful shooting combo with Plaubel Veriwide 100.

Wow another 3.5F fan, I'm trying to figure out how to get the differential
gear to stay in when I put the face plate back on?

Yes that's it, it's the tall gear it doesn't stay in, when I turn it upside down it
falls out when I put the front cover back on it pops out!

Bob,
If I recall correctly, it was kind of tucked under something, that prevented it from falling out. I tried looking for images that show it installed, but I can't find any, sorry. I will keep looking.

Bob,
Apparently, that differential gear only appeared in later versions of 3.5F. I have the first version. It isn't present there. Does your light meter work? Do you need it there?

It works good no problem there. it's just would be nice to have it all working but
it's no big deal I use a handheld meter anyway, I used the camera last week and it
worked great.

Fixed it, I was able to find some soft metal that's bendable and was able to cut
and fold in the slot, and able to attach it back in and it stays.

Peter,

The strange animosity is beyond strange. First off there generally is something wrong if one can't get along with me; secondly why get pissed off at Leica and Leica consumers (envy, class issues, status???)?

I kinda get it that at the SL price point one can save money by buying other cameras, or even upgrade to a new medium format offering, but don't discount all the compromises of shooting a larger format, or the aweful menu on a A7 and the difficulties with shooting Leica wides.

The funny thing is I personally know some of these haters, and they are generations younger. Once I got to 50 I realized that I don't have that many decades left so I decided to spend some of my money and live life more richly. Before 2007 I only owned a Nikon F3P (that I still shoot and own) so over the past decade I was smart and accumulated some cameras that I can use over the rest of my life, with no intent to offend people.

I totally understand what it was like not to have luxury in my life because for decades I did without and just scrapped by, and it only was later in life that I actually leapfrogged ahead. Kinda funny how some people can get all caught up in their own entitlement. Also perhaps the sign of the times and an example of "Camera Facists." In a way the haters seemed to be like dictators that empowered themselves because somehow they are experts and author-it Tees because they can read spec sheets.

BTW I can't think of a camera I don't like for some reason or another, and do you really think I care about what other cameras other people might like? All I know is I could never be a "Camera Facist" and my problem is that I kinda like all cameras. Call me a "Camera Liberal" but politically I'm at heart a progressive-moderate/libertarian because I hate both the Democrates and the Republicans equally. They both suck.

Kinda funny how those threads replicate our times. Now I have to worry that I might get beat up by facists because I shoot a Leica SL. Also note that as a result of all the senseless arguing it seems that it has garnered more interest in the SL. LOL. Also note of how the haters made news that Leica is expensive and carries a premium for the branding. Do you think members of this forum don't know that?

Anyway Norm approves. LOL. I now have to brace myself for more attacks because I really love the gigantic 50 Lux-SL. Now the haters have two reasons not to like me: my SL, and my 50 Lux-SL. Ha-Ha. Time to build up my military...

Bob,

The "E" has the honor of the sturdy metal hood that seems to feel like bombay doors when opening. I love that aggressive snap that kinda emulates a pump shotgun.

The combination of the snap of that metal hood and the quiet of a leaf shutter is mighty cool.
