Am I the only one who hates nylon bags?
They all seem so stiff, bulky. Rigid, bloody things that feel like plastic.. Not to mention they're all the same looking! I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between the latest Kata, LowePro or ThinkTank nylon-box-on-a-strap.
My Safrotto bags, though... Lovely canvas... Soft, flexible, water-resistant camera conveyances that wrap themselves around my scrawny arse instead of banging against me in a most annoying fashion.
Someone tell me why I should just accept nylon... It'd make bag shopping so much easier 😛

Ruling something out just because it was a clone seems silly, IMO.
I say 'was' because as I said before, I really believe the Safrotto bags are past the Domke ones at this point. Student surpasses the master? 😛

A random thought just now: I wonder if the attitude towards knockoffs really comes from ones upbringing and generation as much- or more so- than personal experience...
I've grown up in a post cold war, everything-made-by-China period. There's no 'national enemy' for me or opposing system of government/beliefs. Nobody ever told me to "buy Canadian" or anything.

I like my black 'ballistic nylon' Domke F2. Never liked the canvas ones. I don't want to carry a hammock from my shoulder and I don't want anything wrapping around my arse.
 
Domke's are much better, but are heavier for the same carrying capacity. The J803 weighs over 2 lbs empty, and the 5FXb is probably a lb.

I carry a single camera and lens, with extra battery and sometimes extra filter in a lightweight nylon bag with a pocket on the exterior for the accessories. It weighs maybe 1/4 of the domke.

I just ordered a lowepro 140ex to try.

The natural cotton camcorder bag at walmart is nice, but would need padding.

The PET Timbuk2 bag at sundance trading is also nice and tempting. It is sometimes sold as a "purse" but I've seen them at local running shops, and they are defninitely less purse looking than many dedicated "camera bags" and were marketed there as just an acessory for runners.

I know I am not completely rational on this ... I have owned several "foreign" cars (currently a Honda), and one could argue they're all "clones" of "American" autos ... or are American/Canadian cars "clones" of the German invention? 😛

In any event, in this case I just appreciate the quality of Domke, but also choose to give my money to Mr. Domke (whatever portion he gets), my way of thanking him for him inventing "the photographer's bag" ... the products work just fine, I can't imagine them failing me in my lifetime.
