I ran into this article from 1986 that still rings true:

Despite the change from film to digital, the article article clearly explains the reasons for both. And the conclusion:
"So which is the ''ideal'' camera? If you are called on to do many different kinds of photography, as pros are, the ideal answer is to have both."
Another point of interest: even in 1986, a Leica RF (then new M6) was expensive. Some things haven't changed.
