I'm just now watching a fascinating and tragic TVO documentary on this photographer, his wife, her lover, and a bunch of stolen prints and negatives.

It was even worse than the documentary lets on from a fellow I know here in Madison. He was an assistant back in the day of the famous train shots & later was executor of Mr. Links estate. Nasty mess to put it mildly. He won't go into detail but the show will tell you enough.

Yes, the executor and trustee was part of the documentary, telling some of the story.

The story of the latter stages of his life is indeed tragic.

There was a doco made about 8 or 9 years back that gave the full story of his life up to the point before the troubles started.

It described in detail the methods used to obtain those fantastic images and the face - to - face interviews were a treat. It is always good to hear something straight from the source.

Just as an aside, Winston made a cameo appearance in the film October Sky as a steam locomotive driver - what else!

Go to the O. Winston Link Museum site and you will find his books on sale at very reasonable prices. Such images are well worth owning.

If you are ever in Roanoke, Virginia do not miss the Link Museum. I was attending a conference at the hotel across the street from it a few years ago and ended up spending an entire afternoon at the museum. The museum is in an old train station, very close to the Norfolk Southern Roanoke Maintenance yards.

The documentary was well done, I saw it at the FullFrame documentary festival a year or two ago. Really sad how that story played out,

I'll second that. I made it down to the Link Museum last year, and shot some NS freights over by the yards. The Museum of Transportation was a bit sparse, but while not as worthy of a trip as the Link Museum, it was worth it spending the few hours of the day I didn't spend at the Link Museum.
