Hi

My first post...

I am shooting with a iiic, which I just had CLA'd. I've just shot my first rolls of b/w relying on sunny16 and have had mainly ok exposures. But I've noticed on some shots there is a band of under- or over-exposure (it varies) along the top right of the frame. You can just see it in the top right of this shot http://singtokong.smugmug.com/All-My-Sets/Hong-Kong/13107370_ShKTh#1276878601_GsgcJrr-A-LB
I don't understand how the shutter curtain can move in such a way as to cause this strange variance in light hitting the film. Any ideas...?
Many thanks

It's underdevelopment - the tank wasn't full when the film was developed and the top part of the roll was out of the developer between agitation cycles.

Doesn't look like a development problem to me. Some kind of light leak. It's a rectangular bit of light flash; see the flat edge about 7/8 of the way up the right side.

I agree that it looks like a development problem. If developed on spools its possible that spool slipped up the tank core on inversion and didn't slide back down. That's one of the reasons for rapping the tank on its base after inversions.
If the lab are using dip and dunk machines I guess something similar has happened.

But having said that, its a bit curious why it has not happened on the left of the image as well.

I had the same problem with my Leica II. It turned out to be caused by light falling on the shutter curtain while the lens was being changed. I carried out a simple experiment and confirmed it.

It is possible that it is a light leak; it's hard to tell from the scan, but it still looks more like a development issue to me. Shoot something of a very even tone and see if the band is even density from side to side (development) or not (light leak) would be more indicative. Learning to develop film yourself takes some of the variability out of this. Good luck and if you figure it out let us know what happened.
