Hey,

I'm a decent amateur photographer. I have been doing this for quite a few years, but my interest--and skill--have increased considerably over the past 3-4 years.

I keep learning a lot on my own, each day, each week, each month--via trial and error. I read photography books and try to learn from viewing the photos and paintings of others. I read RRF and other sites to learn about different techniques.

But I do wonder whether I'd learn a lot--and leap forward--if I gained some formal training. I don't live somewhere where I could take a weekly course. Nothing like that. But I wonder if anyone has taken a few day course, likely in a large city. I am sort of envisioning a course where people travel from other places to take part in it, to work with an expert, and press forward in this wonderful art.

Does anyone know of anything like this? Have any of you pondered getting such training, etc.? Or should I keep slogging on my current path (one that is going well, but does make me ponder this idea)?

Anyway, just a thought, one that bounces to the surface once in a while.

Lots of 3-5 day photo courses around the country - check online. In New York City the International Center of Photography has lots of courses - some weekly for a semester, some 1 or 2 weekends and some 3-5 day courses as well. Check online at www.icp.org for the latest catalog. I have taken several there over the years and all were great.

A few other suggestions would be workshops in Santa Fe, Photographer's Formulary in Montana, and the Maine Photo Workshops in Rockport Maine. Lots of offerings in each of these venues, as well as many, many others across the nation. Something to fit the needs of most levels of accomplishment, from amateur to pro. A Google search will turn up specific locations and types of offerings.

I've taken a few classes at ICP (International Center of Photography) here in NYC, the continuing ed classes, and really enjoyed them. I found that I really grew a lot and also started to appreciate photographs I wouldn't have before. Positive experiences and would take those classes again.

thanks so much to all of you. i have been wanting to ask this question for a while, but have not. after getting your feedback, i have checked out a few of the recommended things and will try to plan one for the next year. a weekend workshop in nyc would be great, as it could pair well with an extended visit there.

great thanks.
