Hi
Would like to know what is the going price range for a used good condition BESSA R and R2?

at the same, what beginner optically good lens would you recommend going with the bessa?

many thanks

For the bessa R, no doubt, the color-skopar 35mm f/2.5 classic is a fantastic companion.

there were a lot of R's and R2's for sale the last few days, so have a look at the last couple of pages in the classifieds section, that should give you a good idea.

Prices in Europe are generally a lot higher, so I can't help you much. I got a fantastic deal on a Bessa R + Jupiter-8 + Color-Skopar 35, all black, all like new in box, for just € 250.

I sold my bessa R and color-skopar 35mm on ebay a few months ago for around £60 more than I paid for it new.

I'm sure you have already checked out the prices new on CameraQuest
I recently purchased a Bessa R, a CV 35mm color skopar and J-8 from here for $300 US (from Sockeyed - Ben). The equipment was in impeccable condition and well worth the cost.

how is the optical quality of the color-skopar 35mm f/2.5 ?
is the image very sharp and magical (somewhat like what some people seem to describe of the CZ slr lenses... ) ??

very sharp and contrasty. I don't know what you mean by "magical". Personally, I would say the older uncoated leicas are more "magical" (think glow etc), and this one is rather clinical, actually. But in a good way. Just different.

I have not shot enough with this lens and other 35mm rangefinder lenses to compare them extensively, so I'll just say the 35 skopar is a stunning lens at an amazing price.

I just bought a NIB Bessa R and a NIB 35/2.5 Color Skopar and the grip for $425 including shipping. Having owned this combo before (except for the grip), I deeply regretted selling it, and am pleased to get a new kit back. Can't comment on the grip. Never had one.

As for the lens, as Jonas opined, it is "clinically sharp." You want sharp? You got it. It's an amazing lens and may be the best bang for the buck out there.

For some reason, pancake lenses make me nervous. Their sole advantage, as best I can determine, is that they collapse into the camera body and thus make the camera slimmer and easier to stuff in a pocket.

For me, I'll find a bigger pocket.

Nah, pancakes are simply (in theory) flatter lenses. No collapsibility which is 3/4 of the reason I want a 50/2 Heliar for my CL... 😱 The 35 pancake really isn't all that much more compact and really shouldn't be called a pancake (IMO & all that). The real pancake is the 35/3.5 Elmar - I really do not think there was any more compact 35mm lens than that one - sticks out about as much as a 50/3.5 Elmar when collapsed... 😉

Now, I'd never thought of "clinical" as a way to describe the 35/2.5, but it fits to a T. It's not a bad thing, necessarily, but it's like the difference between a sharp jackknife in your pocket and a scalpal in a doctor's hand. I had one in SC mount and as far as I am concerned it is one of the top 5 lenses I've owned. If I still had a Contax or Kiev I'd miss it even more 🙂
