If anyone is interested, I've returned my M2, Summaron 35/2.8 and coffee [!] to it's rightful place as my Avatar. Tho' I dearly love a recently acquired K4a & J8M 53/2... well, a Leica is a Leica.
What I've learned here is, resizing to below 19.5kb is a pain in the butt. As we know, resizing changes the configuration of the pixels, and some images made tiny, look pretty miserable. Tips on doing this effectively are welcome.

Actually, as far as avatar size goes, this system seems to be about the most liberal there is.
For other systems that are not this way, using the "save for web" function in the newer Photoshop versions will give you a few optimized versions of your avatar in various formats, with previews, and you can choose which, if any, you want to use.

I don't think below 19.5kb is a problem... Then again mine is b&w so takes up less space in greyscale jpg. I did have a problem uploading for some reason but a few days ago it finally worked so here it is finally. As long as people don't think I'm that guy it's fine with me!

Post the image somewhere, for instance the RFF Gallery. Find the image presented as a thumbnail. Instead of clicking on the image to view it, click to save the thumbnail image (right-click or cntrl-click [Mac]). The thumbnail usually works pretty good "as is," that is, it is sized OK. In the rare cases when it has not, I've tried opening the thumbnail in PS to size it, but just opening the file in PS makes it too big. I've had success "editing" thumbnails in MS Paint (when I was working on a PC).

I've used the free Windows image-viewing utility Irfanview to resize pictures to 125x125 pixels. (Isn't that the maximum? Never seems to exceed 19.5KB.) Irfanview, by Irfan Skiljan, is just fantastic for many reasons, but one of them is that it optionally uses a very good algorithm to resize pictures. Just select "Lancazos" in the resize-method drop-down box.

Hi All... I've changed my Avatar several times recently...
just couldn't tolerate that digitized look of parts of the
Thumbnail breaking up!
Irfanview IS my favorite editor, and that "Lancazos" filter helps.
Thanks guys, mike
