$7k. Eh. Not excessively terrible.
$7,619.50 after sales tax.
I wonder if there's a place that sells them in New Hampshire or Delaware. I would use that $619 for a road trip and pick it up tax free.
Just noticed, it includes a car charger. Not bad.
So the M8 was released at $4800 in September '06. And the M9 debuts at $7000 three years later.
My 27th Birthday is Monday.

Release date is September 9th. I don't know if the NDA specified the hour.

so even for a fixed lens... the X1 doesnt come with a built in OVF? which is optional...

The best camera is one that still works!
I supect I'll be howled down for mentioning this but when I bought a D70s with the kit lens a few years back, it had a suggested retail of close to $2000.00 AUD here in OZ. I would guess, though I'm not certain, that the camera that fits into this prosumer DSLR slot and effectively supercedes the D70s would have to be the D90 ... correct me if I'm wrong! Looking at the web site of the same camera dealer the D90 and kit lens has a recommended retail of $1595.00 ... some $400.00 cheaper.
The fact that a Japanese camera manufacturer can offer us major improvements in a subsequent model for significantly less money ... while the jump from M8 to M9 incurs a 45% price increase from Leica, does my head in!
Does someone want to take the time to explain to me how this works. ?

They will charge the highest amount that the market will support. The market for Leica is well heeled pj's, amateurs, some professionals and collectors. That is good business, as much as it annoys a lot of us. I'm sure they'll show up on the used market in a few months at much more reasonable prices.

$2k for the X1, ouch. I am a D-Lux 4 owner and was hoping to upgrade. I'm thinking now to go the the M4/3rds route.

Well I am a D-Lux 4 owner and also an M6TTL owner (wishing to upgrade to a digital M). If you want real 'ouch' quality have a prayer for those of us in the Antipodes. The first listings appearing for the M9 indicate a tax inclusive amount of ..... AUD11,995! That is roughly USD10,000 depending on the exchange rate fluctuations. Enough to make one cry

Yes, one of the great things about the internet is it has revealed how much we have been getting ripped off paying retail Downunder. If I buy the M9 it will be in Singapore tax free. I'll have a nice holiday for a week or ten days and still have plenty of change in my pocket.

In that case why don't we all just boycott this M9 and leave LEICA marketing to come up with a price point that WE the consumer is happy to pay. If we had backbone and nobody made an order then voila, the price would drop!

PS. I still don't think it will come close to a D700 anyway!!!!!

Simple, the M9 is a camera with one feature that everybody wanted, but that costs significantly more money to make: full frame. I guess if you compare the release prices for the Nikon D200 and D700 you find that Nikon didn't drop the price.

My guess is that the M9 will beat the d700 at least from iso 80-1600, maybe it will beat/compete with the 5d mkII in the same range. And it has quite a few nice lenses to play with too

The M9 price compared to a Canon 1DSmk3 or Nikon D3X is not so bad if you are a pro photographer who needs that kind of thing and you are knee deep in lenses. The X1....ludicrously over priced for a point and shoot with a f2.8 lens and no viewfinder.
