IMO, the classifieds are littered with useless ads that have nothing left to sell. Often even the selling price is redacted, so they're just a waste of space.
Any way to delete them?

Short Answer: Yes, delete them.

Long Answer: I liked it way back when, when EvilBay used to keep old items around so that you could see about where the market is and which way it's going. Actual pricing knowledge is valuable for both sellers and buyers. If value is sinking sellers can decided to sell earlier to recoup more of their investment than they might when it bottoms out.

I'd love it if the head bartender could have someone whip up a market tracking application that sellers could post what they sold items for. Not sure all sellers would want to do it, if well designed might take all of 30 seconds per item sold. The big cheese becomes some what of a market maker of sorts. It might ad a unique value to this wonderful site not found other places.

In any event, dump the old ads into the bit bucks, save the space.

Sold ads

Well the sold ads have a purpose

Proves that many items are sold on rff

Gives a bookmark to leave feedback
Most users find leaveing feedback very difficult ,
They give up .
Feedback on rff seems to be the Rubix cube of online experience .

Every time I've sold an item here, the listing seems to immediately disappear on its own once I designate the item as "sold".

I have seen ads disappear if "SOLD" is mentioned in the title of the ad. I have left ads up for a few days for feedback after putting "SOLD" in the body and they stayed till I deleted them.

On Ebay you can still see things that sold by searching "Completed Listings."

Yes. If a seller chooses to, they can delete their ad or mark it as "Sold" (in which case the ad is still in the system but is removed from the front page). Mods can delete ads or mark ads as "Sold" too. I'd prefer sellers removed ads for sold items too, but ultimately the seller is paying for a service so its up to them what they do with their ad.

Every time I've sold an item here, the listing seems to immediately disappear on its own once I designate the item as "sold".

Ads designated as "Sold" are still in the system but are removed from the front page.

When I take out a 30-day ad on RFF, it disappears automatically at that point.
If an item sells before that, I do not delete the ad, for a reason: I simply type "SOLD" and quietly give the buyer a week or so to be sure he is going to keep it. If he complains, I untype "SOLD" and let the ad continue, while we un-do the deal.
This has never actually happened (a returned item), but that's my procedure just in case.

As a buyer, I would prefer that the old ads remain visible with prices, so that I can get a sense of the market over time. I imagine it's also good for RFF's SEO to have them indexed for search engines.

This is my reason to keep an ad online, to give the buyer a reference to what he actually bought and assess whether condition of the item is as described.
Once the item has reached buyer, I remove the ad after a few days or after word was received that it's all okay.
