Was in town today, dropped into Ye Olde Leica Dealer.

"Have a look at this!!!" sez the bloke.......

"Oh....." sez I

"OH......" I sez

"OH...."

Yes, it's the new Titanium M7!!!!! <gasp!>

:) Oh that's pretty! :) And light!!!! :D And tough! HOW MUCH????????????? HOW MUCH DID YOU SAY???????

SEVENTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS?????????????

body only. blardy hell!!!!!!! who the hell is going to buy one of these things?? I mean, that's serious money.

Betcha none of them EVER get a film put through them.........

Seems rather pointless to me. A camera is for taking pictures! Not for idling its life in a box of glass :)

Body only??

I bet they'll throw in a bodycap with a pinhole in it if you're really going to plunk down 17K

Dammit, I'm so poor I can't even afford to dream about these models! :bang:

*goes back to dreaming about Kievs and Zorkis*

That is absurd.

The M6 Titanium's were a "relatively small" premium, as were the F2T'2, F3T's, and FM2T's.

Brian, the difference between the M7 Titanium and the M6 Titanium is that the M6 was just Titanium coated - giving a very hard wear reasistent (and pretty) finish. The M7 Titanium is made from solid titanium - which means it's lighter (about 100gm lighter, I think) and tougher.
Making stuff out of Titainium ain't cheap; it's a B***ch to machine, but over three times the price?

Incidentaly, there's a M6 Titanium with matching Summilux 35 Ti lens in another shop in town, it's very nice too........ (drool)

But yeh, it's still absurd........

Yeh Chug, it's that one, It is a lovely thing, and you get a lens thrown in too for your "slightly" cheaper price...... :)

Yes, but this is the only way they're going to buy themselves out of financial difficulties! (*) I think that at this stage I'd rather see an incredibly light, plastic bodied M-mount Leica at less than five percent of that price, if it could be done.

(*) Sarcasm.

They're not going to "buy themselves out of financial difficulties" that way. If they would come down to earth, maybe so. There are stories that a good part of Leitz is now owned by some snooty French outfit that wants prices raised. Where's the limit?

Question: How much did that titanium M7 actually cost to produce??

Our VM-17 CNC will do Titanium. And we have some ingots! I have got to learn cad/cam!

The F2T was "only" about $300 more than a standard F2 in 1979, ~$900. I bought one for work to use in a vacuum chamber. The thought was they did not want it to reflect light and not be paint covered. Twist my arm!

Tim,
This reminds me of the day I dropped in on my local camera store only to have their on-staff Leica user ask if I "wanted to see something?" He put an ordinary cardboard box, probably 12x12x18, on the counter and proceeded to pull out thousands of dollars worth of his cameras. This included a black LHSA edition, two titanium M7's (one with tan leather), and several other Leicas with Luigi cases and new leather coverings from camearaleather. Each had their own lens. I was in shock.

Not to be outdone I had to whip out my Zorki 4 w/ CV 35.

Quick! go to Ebay; Auction 7521938529!
Same set from KBcamera 5 hours to go.
Only 10.000! What a bargain :D

mad_boy (But not that mad!!)

I am sitting here thinking of all the various combinations of cameras and food that 17,000 GBP could buy (my guess that is around 28k US).

That camera ought to have sapphire or emerald bearings at every pivot point for that kind of cash. I wonder if all the works in that camera are machined from titanium.

Brian, I have an INSANE idea. Rhino 3d outputs CNC CAM files. Let's reverse engineer a FED2 and machine them from titanium ingots. Then use spring steel for the shutter curtains. Sell them for say $1,200 US each. Forget adding a metering system. Just give each buyer a Sekonic L-208.

OK, I said it was insane.
