Oh My Goodness (digital OM)

Rumours: Digital Olympus OM

Rumours: Digital Olympus OM

Has anyone seen this?

This would be a dream for me. I love my OM1 and shoot almost exclusively with it. In my opionion it is the pinnacle of camera engineering. I would love a digital OM, especially if it is as small as the OM1.

EDIT: My apologies to the moderator who had to move my thread here. I foolishly thought I was the first one to discover this and didn't realise there already is a 6 page thread.

"real photographer"

"real photographer"

As a "real photographer," I can easily shoot a Retina IIa, Leica IIIf etc. etc. using guess exposure and all, but I also really enjoy shooting my Olympus E-P1.

As a former OM-1 shooter as well, I can imagine that Olympus could release an OM-D camera that would give you the joy of photography and the joy of a modern camera, all in one!

:)

Kosta: Exactly. A digital OM would have controls for on/off, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, EV compensation, and (maybe) highlight/shadow reading. That's it. And no screen. Real photographers don't need no frikkin' screen.

I would like a screen that I can hide away like on my R-D1. Seems like a small thing but along with the 'analogue' controls, adds to the way I like to shoot. I'd be very interested in an OM-D that had all this. But the EVF would have to very good.

Thanks for the references to Sony, I hadn't considered that nor seen the rumours. I certainly understand their interest in the medical group, but I'm not sure what to think of that with respect to the photo unit. It would give Sony three sensor formats in the pro/advanced amateur market, creating less than streamlined marketing, sales, etc. With their APS-C sensor products, why would they keep m4/3? How much would they want to keep all the R&D team and engineers? Not being contrary, just wondering what is the value to them for Olympus camera division other than the IP.

You realise you can just turn the screen off?
This thing is meant to have a tilt adjustable screen, so probably no flippy trick. I don't mind though - I prefer my screens as fixed as possible for durability.

Yes, I was aware that you could turn them off. It's what I do with my Ricoh GRD.

Not really about the logic, more an aesthetic.

flexibility?

flexibility?

I've never understood photographers who can only enjoy shooting using a single method. I've shot TLR's, SLR's, LF, RF's and now digitals with LCD only. Honestly, I find LCD the most natural method, especially on a tripod.

While, easy to find times when it would be useful, but tilt screens annoy me and make the cameras feel more Rube Goldberg - like, so I prefer a sleeker fixed design.

As much as I love the OM system, I cannot get excited about this. It is essentially guaranteed to be 4/3rds. Along with a low resolution LCD, and a so-so EVF. I will not touch it if is less than APS-C.

Conversely, one could say they don't understand photographers who can't make up their minds on what they want to use... ;) What works for you or I may not work for others.

Well, while it is fairly certain to be m4/3, there is no indication as to the LCD or EVF being sub-par (the LCD is rumored to be OLED actually). Olympus has hinted at the EVF being "something special" so we shall see.

As for sensor size, I used to think like you, but have lately started researching 4/3 a little more carefully and realized that at least for my needs it is more than sufficient. Carl Weese posted a great article on TOP a few days back with his thoughts and experiences on printing large from 4/3 and I was convinced.

Not hard to understand really, I just prefer to use a viewfinder. I own a E-P1 and there are times that I wish I had waited for the later models capable of attaching an EVF. If that was the case I probably wouldn't be half as exited about the OM-D.

I'm glad that you find using the LCD as natural as I find using a viewfinder.

Just the very sight of that 'art' filter mode on the mode dial makes me cringe. One of the things I really like about the x100 - no lame stuff like that.
Otherwise it's looking good so far... The whole thing should leak pretty soon!

lol...ART on the mode dial...so you can chose via mode dial if you want to produce ART, DOCUmentation, FAmilySHots or CRAP :)

What I find 'lame' about the Art filters is the inability to tweak the parameters.

Had they allowed me to do that, I could have been motivated to dive into the menus and create custom "art filters" that I like the results of.

It kinda reminds me of the arcane Custom Code in Canon/Nikon SLRs.

Eh, I have no intention of using the art filters on any given camera (though the GRD4 has a couple of nice monochrome modes), but their existence doesn't offend me.

true

true

Very true.

But for me, I'd never shoot a RF then since SLR's and digital LCD cameras work better for much of what I shoot!

So, while the others work better on practical grounds, I still "like" shooting my Leica's and Retina's!

:)

A girlfriend has fun using the art filters on her iPhone and they look fun for her wants... so sure, I'd let other people have them on a camera... I shoot A or M though, so as long as I can find them on the dial, no problem!

:)

Ok, so you don't like shooting your E-P1?

OM-D sounds like it could be a fantastic little camera!
