Old Camera Back to Life (Battery) Olympus AFL-S

Hi all,

I recently acquired an Olympus AFL-S. It is in its original packaging and in perfect condition.

Upon putting the battery in it, it appeared that not all functions were working as they should.

The indictor of focus distance in the viewfinder was not displaying properly and the self timer was not working quite as it should. Also, sometimes upon firing the shutter, the film would not advance right away.

However, upon continued use, it appears that the camera has come back to life so to speak. For instance, the focal distance indicator appears to now be working perfectly.

Has anyone had an experience similar to this? It's a great camera so Im hoping it gets to working at 100%.

I have an Olympus XA that acted that way. I suspect such things as hardened lubricants and tired/dead condensers.

I hope it does come completely back to life and you can enjoy it.

I've never had that experience but I'm happy you did and it comes back all the way.

Dear Mr. Muskellunge,

I bought a case of junk in a Goodwill auction. It had a Canon EOS A2 in it. I put a battery in it upon receipt and the grip actually got warm but the camera didn't power on.

I waited a couple of weeks and tried again. The camera turned on properly has been working exactly as it should ever since. All functions and controls work, and the exposure meter is spot on with everything I have to use for comparison.

When you combine a working camera along with what is easily $ 75.00 worth of accessories that work, and a decent hard case I'm happy with the $ 20.00 I spent.

Ha. Thanks guys. Sure enough I tried to fire it up today and it was back to half operational.

I also got my first roll of film back. Turns out, it wasn't just the focus indicator that wasn't adjusting, it was not actually focusing properly. Almost all of them came back out of focus.

Once I finish this current roll, I will insert the film sheet (necessary to operate camera without film) and cycle through and see if it comes back to life.

If that doesn't work, I am going to buy another one and try and learn how to do the repair myself.
