Oly 17/2.8 Flair not Flare! :)

I really like horizon photos and yours are especially beautiful. I hope you don't mind to show one of mine, also shot with the Oly 17mm pancake.

I always think of the 17mm as the Oly's snapshot lens. I got rid of mine when I sold on my E-P1 but, by coincidence, have just ordered a replacement to fit on the E-PM1 (paying less than I sold the old one for). I find it very difficult to use for open scenes, like landscapes, though it's good for grabbing a moment...

I rarely use wide angle lenses for landscape work, but in this case it seemed appropriate and I already had the lens mounted on the camera. I guess I think of the 35mm (eq) FL a "jack of all trades" FL, so I guess I could think of it as a standard "snapshot" lens... in the sense that I used to think of my Minox GL and Olympus Epic Stylus as snapshot cameras.

I love the tiny profile of the 17/2.8 and like the FL better than the wider P14.

Even though most people disagree for some reason, I find the flare characteristics of the 17/2.8 to be very nice. My gf took a few shots standing next to me using her P20 and the flare from the P20 was really nasty and she hated her shots.

When she saw how much better my shots came out she asked why my 17 did so much better than her 20. I laughed and said, "you don't think there aren't a few reason I keep shooting this inferior lens, do you?"

:)

Hope you enjoy your new 17!

:)
