I just pulled my Kiev out after a long time in the closet after reading a few of the Kiev threads and found a slight difference in mine that all the pics of the 4am I've seen here don't have. My copy has a small olympic logo to the right of the lens mount. Is this a commemorative camera... an oddity... or just something someone added after the factory?

I believe that the Kiev was branded with an Olympic logo to celebrate 1980 summer games held in Moscow. Not sure how many were made, or how to identify a genuine model from the probable fakes available on eBay. I am sure the knowledgable Kiev fans on the site will chime in with better information.

o.k. then!
look at the pictures at the link i gave you.
camera must be made from 1979-1980,but i don't think that you can find exact serial numbers for Kievs with olympic logo.

There were Kiev 4M's with the Olympic logo produced. I would guess that the serial number stamped in the accessory/flash shoe starts with 79 - 80. If so, it should be genuine and not too rare other than produced only during that period. You may want to ask around on the following forum (link attached). Very knoladgeable folks on that site...http://www.ussrphoto.com/

1980 would have been the Olympics that Jimmy boycotted. Nowadays he's busy being a good ol' boy to everybody.

As long as FSU cameras are copies of Leicas/Contaxes, they might as well copy the commemorative bit also. Leica has long been known for such antics. If you want a commemorative for when your dog had puppies, Leica wll be happy to crank one out.
