Olympus 12-60

Hello,

I seem to like the Olympus E-30 a lot and with the E-5 coming I am wondering if I am getting crazy.

The financial gap between a Nikon D700 and the E-5 will be small so what could be the reason for choosing the Oly over the Nikon?
The reason for me could be the 12-60mm lens from Olympus and the use of heaps of legacy glass.



Feel free to cast your light on this matter, I already know I will get more confused 😀

The use of legacy glass was a big draw for me to go with olympus. I went from a Canon 10D to an Oly 510.

Small form factor and good native lenses were strong selling points

The 12-60 was the first lens I bought, and it is a very good and very flexible lens. I also added the 50-200 which is another stellr lens, along with the 25mm pancake and the 9-18, which are good lenses too. Recently a 25/1.4 Panasonic rounded out the lens collection.

I looked at the E-3 - but came to the conclusion that if I was committing to carrying a bigger camera, then I might as well go for a full frame camera. Looked at the D700, but in the end went for a canon 5D Mk 2 because of

1) Better support for the range of legacy lenses I had acquired

2) Video capabilities

3) High ISO performance

I am not sure I wouldn't make the same choice today even with the arrival of the E-5. I still do most of my day to day shooting on the 510 or the E-p1 - the Canon gets only used occasionally, but undoubtedly is a stunning camera.

Thanks Kevin,

I guess it is the difference between what I need and what I want/crave.
Given what I need, the results and what I will be doing with them the E-5 with the 12-60 is overqualified.
So a FX camera would be completely over the top.

looking at your shots on rangefinder cameras...maybe the panaleica 25/1.4 might make a nice fit for your e-30, and a compliment to your existing zoom.

If you already have the 12-60, the E-5 would be a perfect match and will complete a weather-sealed kit that will last you decades probably.

The only lens I'd consider adding is the 9-18mm. I think those two are close to the top quality that Olympus offer us. The elite f/2 zooms are too expensive and too big for me.

The 12-60 is a great lens, no question about it. What I'm waiting to find out is what it offers in IQ that the E-30/E-620 don't offer. My guess is that the difference is not huge, and as much as I like the idea of a fully weather-sealed kit, I'll probably end up with a used or reconditioned E-30 or a second E-620. The E-3/5 are just too bulky for my taste.
