I have both of these cameras. Just how hard is it to clean the viewfinder without touching anything else? I want to give it a try if not too complicated. Has anyone here done it and is it worth it?
Thanks
35RC - not hard at all. Contrary to belief I clean also semisilvered mirror if it has haze. Just proper tools and minimum of efforts have to be used. Results suggest it's worth the deal.
Cleaning the viewfinder is easy, simply remove the winding lever and film rewind knob. Below these you will find two nuts which hold the cover on. Remove these nuts and lift the cover off. There is a paper cover on the top of the rangefinder which can be gently removed (so as not to tear it). You can clean the insides of the glass with Q-tips and lens cleaning fluid. Use a dry Q- tip to gently brush dust from the mirror while using a blower to blow the dust away. Then glue the paper cover back in place. The job takes less than 10 minutes.
Frontman has well covered this. Note on q-tips - they should be with pure cotton. I use clean part of microfiber cloth, breathing on mirror before touching it. MF cloth works for me better to reach ends of mirror where space is limited to access with q-tips. Minimum of force has to be applied. Mostly it's enough just to clean-up your breath touching mirror very slightly.
Well I finally got around to cleaning the viewfinder in the Olympus SP. Took me about 20 minutes working carefully and it seems like I gained about 2 stops! BIG difference. Thanks for all the good info here.
