Olympus 35 RC vs SP

I've never used a 35 SP, so I can't personally comment on its operation, but the Head Bartender has two very good articles about the 35 RC and the 35 SP. Just on paper, here are some differences between the RC and the SP:

  • 42/2.8 vs 42/1.7 lens;
  • 43 degree metering angle vs. dual 20 degree and 6 degree spot meter;
  • No metering in manual mode vs. uncoupled manual metering (both cameras have fully manual battery-free over-ride);
  • Shutter speed dial on top deck vs. shutter speed control on lens;
  • Odd 43.6mm filter thread vs. more common 49mm filter thread;
  • RC is smaller and lighter than the SP, 410g vs. 600g.

The aperture ring is pretty hard to access on the RC; they added a knob to the SP. Worth considering if you plan to use in manual mode a lot. Both have amazing lenses!

Agree that aperture ring is hard to reach - seems to share the same or similar ring parts with the Trip 35 and the half frame 35 EED. Plastic, budget oriented.

The RC came 1 year later than the SP though. A tad cheaper at 22300 yen vs the SP at 24800 yen.

I believe they're different product lines with the RC created to answer the call for a small but sufficiently sophisticated body at the time. The SP is pretty full-featured with that extra spot meter.

Both are very well built. I believe Olympus and Canon were the last two strongholds that kept the workmanship on their small rangefinders intact until the advent of plastic wonders.

My experience with the RC has been very mixed. I've had problems with it, but with a CLA things have been better. These 70s Japanese cameras were really not well made. So expect the worst but I like the photos from my 35mm photos from it better than any other of my 20 some 35mm cameras.

I can take it anywhere, it has a meter on board so no problem there. It is small enough to put in my sport coat pocket and the best feature is when I see a photo it is a quick shot.
