I have a 35SP in lovely condition, everything working--except for the spot meter. Sometimes it gives correct reading, but generally when I press the button the needle drops to the bottom end of the scale, occasionally goes wild. Loose connection? Grateful for any suggestions.

Loose connection vs. dirty contact. Probably an easy fix if you're up to it. Otherwise I'd just send it to ESSEX. They're great cameras - though I don't recall ever using the spot metering feature on mine.

The Spot meter button is supported by some really weak plastic behind the top cover and over the years of use it just breaks if you can take of the top which is not toooo difficult the repair with super glue is easy hope this helps

Thanks for all the advice. I've done the repair Gerbil62 suggested, but it seems the problem is electronic. I've had a quote from some Olympus specialists on this side of the Atlantic of about £70 (GBP) which seems fair....if not exactly affordable right at the moment.

My 35SP spotmeter has always metered a good 4-5 EV lower than the main meter no matter what I point it at. Is this usual? Does anyone experience this problem as well? I don't use it because of this.

I've never had this problem, so certainly something is not right. I would suspect some faulty wiring, but that's a wild guess. Either don't use the spot meter or send it off to repair. I can't imagine having an SP without the spot meter functioning properly.
