Olympus E-P1 firmware update 1.1

I have noticed any improvement after update although I don't use C-AF. The 17mm isn't any faster (in S-AF mode) to focus although it seems slightly more positive in lower light.

Here's what I got as a personal firmware update...no one else got this....

I have to bend down like I'm tying my shoes.....staying very discreet on the street....
I then extend the official Olympus Tape Measure/focus scale out to 30' (sorry, they have it in feet only and not in meters)...but a future firmware will be a meters tape...

then lock the official tape measure and discreetly stand up...gaze around to my subject...staying very discreet so as not to let them know I am a photographer....

The official Olympus E-P1 Streetshooter's bag will look like a carpenters apron with a pocket for the tape and the camera..it will even hold an extra lens...
Now, your subjects will think you are not a photographer and will not pay attention to you....

You then gaze to the tape measure and read the color coded markings to set your focus distance.....

This is a great firmware update for me....By the way, the official Olympus Focus Scale Tape Measure and combo bag will not work with any other camera system....

Now that the AF works so much better...it really does, I think I can just focus on the tape and not have to use manual focus....

that's a great advantage.....

Thanks Olympus.........ya really made my day.......Shooter

I guess I should read more about what I just downloaded.

The lens update was quick.

Now to go shoot to see how it works.

The AF is much improved.... it's not always the speed but the smoothness in which it works...it seems to be much more accurate with less hunting on the target....
Both kit lenses are much faster than the DP-1 so I'm happy.....

I will give it a try on multi sensor to see how the hunting and accuracy is with all of the focus points active. That will be a big plus.

Interestingly, or not, my experience is that the camera has always confirmed focus quickly (center focus area only on) and the lens has lagged behind the body to set the focus.

I wonder how olympus would be able to include rangefinder-esque functionality (measured distances) when using a manual focus lens? It's not like there is a prism and mirror you can use to triangulate the distance.

Well the DP cameras have a scale, the LX3 has a great scale that actually uses Hyper Focal distance....The Ricoh GR& GX can do it very well also....
So Oly should be able to figure it out...
I have many in a workshop I teach that will unload the camera shortly.....
I still love it but am ready to move on....

I can love it but I can't live with it any more...

I agree. The focus spot confirmation is very fast, however the lens lagged behind (rattles) for 1-2 secs at least. It slows downs the whole process. I assume this is the lens firmware problem.

I updated my EP1 and the 14-42 lens and what I see is the focus speed in single AF, center point, the AF speed is increased by what I could guess is 1/4, seems like the lens is hunting less through the whole range instead more searching through the approx distance of what you are trying to focus on. Unfortunately they did not address any other important issues like being in focus magnification and it auto canceling when you tap the shutter button....next time I hope.

When using non-coupled lenses such as Leica lenses, how do you bring up focus magnification? (I don't have an adapter, and i admit I have not plowed through the manual)
Press the "info" button until the green square appears, then press "ok" to zoom in and out. I turned MF assist off and just use this method for both m43 digital lenses and manual only. You can also choose which "info" screens you want to use in the custom settings menu. I use the green square (Zoom), histogram, and the "rule of thirds" target.

What count zero said, when you push the info button until the green magnification square shows up (another thing I hope they change in the next firmware, the ability to disable so many info button presses for things, many of those functions I dont want) and then you puth the ok button and it magnifies in 7x, and if you use the thumb wheel you can go in 10x, but when you tap the shutter button nothing happens, it stays there, it needs to cancel with you tap the shutter button to be truly effective.

It is already there... Press Menu, go the Gears, go to DISP/-)))/PC, go to INFO SETTING, go to LV-INFO. Note to get to INFO SETTING you have to scroll to the 2nd page.

You can then turn OFF or ON several of the unwanted views. You can reduce it to cycle through just 2 settings but you may prefer a couple extra.

many thanks for this great tidbit of information, I would have never found that on my own, damn menus from hell!

Pleasure. Some of the menu naming and arrangement is unusual to say the least. It took me about 15 minutes to re-find it.

I would be nice to have an extra function button to program, once set up the controls are great (provided you like using the camera the same way all the time).
