Olympus EP-2 Software Update

I've been trying to update my EP-2 to 1.1 and was not able to do so after many tries. Btw, I'm using Mac Intel 10.5.8 and updated the Camera 2 software to version 2.3 already and tried updating camera. I also tried one recommendation I find in the net to remove the SD card and still nothing. The camera was set to storage and after the update it stays at NG and did not update. I also tried downloading the camera firmware updater connected to the internet and nothing happens. Alternatively I tried using my PC netbook download the computer firmware updater PC XP version and still not able to update, it says not able to comunicate with the camera and NG at the LCD screen.. This is really frustrating, what gives? Thanks!

I have a Mac 10.6.3 in use and I updated firmaware with out a hitch on first try. I had the camera set on auto (as versus your storage) and I used firmaware update tool found from Olympus site. It took a while, a long while, but worked.

Actually just went to the Olympus website to see what all the fuss was about. Apparently the new firmware (body) improves the AF function (quicker), and a couple of other refinements.

You have to download the Software Updater first, then once you load that and then connect your camera, it will automatically check for updates. Once I connected the camera, it automatically turned on, and 'Storage' was highlighted. I hit the OK button on the camera, and the computer then detected the camera, checked for the updates, then prompted me to choose what I wanted to update (1.1 Firmware for the body). You then just follow the instructions - which merely involved clicking NEXT and AGREE a bunch of times, and not turning the camera off. Once the process is complete you will see a large OK on the camera's LCD screen.

Pretty straightforward -- we'll see if the camera will now have blazing-fast auto focus!

I do hope that these software updates are an indication of Olympus's commitment to the longevity of this camera. This is a really great piece of equipment (mind you, I've only had it a few days), but I could see this camera as something that will still be a viable tool years down the road. And if Olympus continually supports their customers and their products with these updates and improvements, that can only help all of us in the long run.

The Olympus firmware updater is simple and works really well, until it doesn't. Sometimes it doesn't work at all and is incredibly frustrating. Most people never have a problem, but when you do, it's real.

Gil's only answer, after making sure his battery is 100%, is to keep trying, and maybe call his local Oly distributor and talk to Oly techs if multiple attempts over several days don't work. I really think Olympus needs to abandon tethered updating and just let us upload updates to memory cards, like almost every other mfr.

I updated my E1 and EP1 and assorted lenses many times with no trouble whatsoever, until v1.5 for the EP1. Like Gil, I did everything right, but all I got were constant "can't find camera" or "can't find server" error messages, or the process just wouldn't start. I rebooted my pc between attempts, made sure my EP1 battery was 100%, tried online and Updater, tried different USB cables, nothing worked. I gave up, tried again 12hrs later, and it all went smoothly. All on the same hardware.

My problems were on the first day the firmware was released, so I suppose there might have been server traffic issues at Oly. I don't understand why firmware updating should need to be tethered and partly dependent on mfr server traffic conditions.

Yes I'm in it now I uninstall the camera updater programI downloaded yesterday and downloaded again thru the email I received when I registered my EP2. It's going already for about an hour and still spooling. Looks like it will work not sure how much more time I have to wait though. Grrrrrrrrr.... Oly do consider the memory card update system.

I've said this on this forum before, but it is my sacred mission to say it over and over until Oly changes their minds: it is really dumb to make people install a piece of proprietary software on their computer to update camera firmware. And of course this elminates all Linux users from the equation...and requires a special cable that most of us are inclined to just leave in the box and forget about.

Dragging a file onto the memory card is the only way to go. Every other camera manufacturer does it this way. It would solve all these problems very easily.

Done finally. You have to set the usb to storage not in auto in the set up menu. I thought all the while that when the LCD prompt you just have to click storage then OK.
