I might buy an olympus om1 in which the power winder cover is missing, do you think that it may let any dust in the camera or give any other problems?

Tape it over.
If you have the winder, there is a spot for the storage of this cover, in it and you may find it there.

I don't have the winder, i'll tape it. Since i'm buying it used, may the camera be affected by the dust (or contain dust in important parts) that has come through that gap?

It's possible, but not likely that the camera will be affected by any intrusion of debris. Tape it up; you can buy aftermarket replacements on eBay.
I just saw some of these yesterday. They were winder covers, not battery covers. It may have been on eBay, I don't recall looking too many other places yesterday.

This missing cover is fairly common on OM md bodies.
Tape will work as good as any cover and save the money that the cover would have cost to spend it on film for your OM camera.

Mine was also missing for years (my niece took it to school, and it came back cover-less.) I put a piece of black tape over it, until I sent it to Camtech for an overhaul. It came back with a cap.

Camtech just sent me a quote for current work, including replacement of a missing cap, which was listed as "required".
Sounds like you should cover it up some way or the other.

Nikon F2s and F3s also have a cover for the socket hole where the motor drive spindle mates with the camera body. When the covers went missing many people just covered the hole in the camera bottom with a piece of duct tape, which served very well when the camera was used without the motor.
I'm not very familiar with Olympus cameras, but assume you could do the same thing with no ill effects to the camera or its innards.

A cap marked as "required" on one of my estimates refers to supplying a CHROME battery cap for an original OM-4. Black battery caps from the original 4 are notorious for causing electrical problems. An OM-4 battery/md cap (same cap is used for battery and or md ports btw) will NOT fit an OM-1 through 2N. OM-1 md cap is a bayonet fit, OM-4 is screw-on. OM-1 battery cap is out of stock. John

The bayonet design of the OM-1/2/2n bodies was a primary reason for them going missing so often. 😀

There is a missing cap on my OM4 that is the same size as the battery cap (silver). I assume this is the motordrive socket?

Usually, if you can find a used OM bottom plate for the model you have, it will have both covers, and may surprisingly cost less than ONE of the covers, battery or motor drive sold alone. The same is true of OM parts bodies. A whole OM parts body that does not work sometimes costs less than the two covers sold alone.

I don't have any md caps for sale for the OM-1 through 2N. The ONLY repair I require cap replacement is when an original OM-4 has the black battery cap. Old caps have tiny dots of paint on the threads which can cause electrical problems. Installing the unpainted cap became a part of EVERY Olympus factory OM-4 overhaul. Cover open md port with black electrical tape. Light can find it's way through and fog film. John

Thanks for this! I recently picked up an OM-2n with working motor drive attached. The seller said he didn't have the motor drive cover so I've been searching ebay and other sources, sent emails out for a replacement...didn't find anything. I came across this old thread, and your comment specifically. Opened up the battery compartment and there it was! Would have never thought to look there. Thanks again!
