Olympus OM1 Battery Options

Which is the better way to go for an OM1, CRIS adapter or have the camera modified to use current batteries?

Either one will work. Modification is (mostly) permanent, while the adapter can be removed to go back to the original. On the other hand, why would you want to go back to an unavailable battery, and the adapter is something to lose.

I had my OM-1n modified by John Hermanson.

Given that the modification typically comes as part of an overhaul by Camtech, the modification plainly is better (but more expensive) than a CRIS adapter. If your camera has been previously serviced and is working fine (with no prism foam deterioration) you may want to go the cheaper route.

I use a criscam. I saw no point in going for the expensive conversion. The nice thing about this converter is that you can remove it and put in on another camera. The one for the OM-1 works on other model cameras which in the future may be an advantage to you.

My latest OM-1 came with a ring around the battery cell, so I didn't have to bother with any other adapter. A 1.4v cell is just fine, as it only 0.05v more than the mercury cells were. I just checked though, and the adapter has slipped off the cell, so maybe an O-ring, or half a grommet would be a better choice.

Just be aware of the limitations of the Cris device - it will work the meter just fine in 99.9% of cases, but don't expect it to always light up the battery test bulb, as the current drain is too high. Nothing agaist the product, it is just a bit odd to some people that this happens.

Whatever you decide, make a note on a piece of paper and stick it into the film carton tab holder on the camera back. Otherwise, one day you'll have forgotten...
