Olympus OM2 question

hello all,

i just purchased an olympus om2 and there are some issues, just wondering how and if its worth fixing.

1) sticky shutter, when the camera is fired, it doesnt go all the way up

2) yellowed view in the mirror

are these common problems? because i have encountered number 2 in another olympus i have owned.

I've seen that, before there is the mirror-up-dead-battery, sometimes there is a shutter issue; have you tried a fresh battery?

yep, i have fresh batteries in there. =(

You need fresh silver oxide batteries (MS76, KS76, 357, 303, sr44W, G-13) first. I've seen yellowed viewfinders when the focus screen has been improperly cleaned, the surface being destroyed by solvents. If mirror does not go all the way up, your camera definitely needs service. John

i took it to the camera repairer, he told me it was going to be a write-off, the shutterbox needs an overhauled.

damn. still on look out for om.

just curious, do any of you guys think minolta x-series slr have brighter screens than om?

Well, if you decide to get it done, I've been repairing OM-2/2N for 30+ years. I've never had to send one back (unless dropped, dunked, tampered, sand damaged) as unrepairable. John

FWIW, John fixed up a water-damaged, black OM-2 that had such lovely brassing that I had to have it serviced. Currently he has my OM-1MD for CLA, which will join the OM-2 for my Kodachrome farewell project at Lake Superior this summer.

John has always stood behind his work.

I find it a little disturbing that some tech would judge whether a camera was worth repairing or not so hastily. Send it to Camtech (John) and get a camera back that will be perfect and have the confidence in knowing that it is!

If there's a better finder than the OM-1 out there I'd be surprised ... and I'd want one! 😀

OM-1 and 2 were known for having the biggest and brightest finder at that time. With a 2 series screen or Beattie, it is even brighter and downright amazing how the focus just pops in. John

I was out getting the mail and my neighbor asked if I would take a look at a camera his father picked up (I'm not sure where)...
I was in a very nice case (but not waterproof) it was/is an Olympus OM-2 Spot/Program (pretty sure that's what it is) Black Body with a 28, 50 and another either zoom or tele, some filters, a flash power supply (120 volts) and a Varimagni Finder w/case...
Unfortunately, all have been dunked in water...I told him the camera could be used as a parts camera, the tele has what looked like fungus inside, the other two look like the glass is okay and the Varimagni looks like it could be cleaned up...
I opened up the camera back and did see some rust inside...
Anyone looking for a bunch of parts???
