I've just purchased an Olympus-S off Ebay I don't have much detail at the momentl, I think it's fom the late fifties, it looks to be in very good condition. From the sellers description it works perfectly. Any body out there have any info on these models. I have googled but I've not found a wealth of info. Any info appreciated.

I received the camera yesterday, it's actually a 35 SC model witha 1.8 Zuiko lens. Year of manufacture 1963 I think, the battery cover is different to anything I have seen before it's on the top at the side of the camera. I removed this and tried a 625 Alkaline...it didn't show any signs of life. I got my trusty vinegar out and swabbed away at the contact and gave it a light scuff, placed the battery back in and hey presto that light meter fired back to life. The focus is a little stiff but not that it will bother me. The rangefinder appears to be in alignment, one thing on the top of the rewind lever it has 3 settings color, empty & I can't quite make out the other, anybody no what this is for?

Cheers

Andrew McPhee is more of an expert on Oly RFs of this vintage ... my oldest is the Electroset, which is non-functional (actually, torn apart :( ) at this point. Getting the faster lens is a bonus, I think. Whether the meter is accurate or not, post some shots when you can. My guess is that it will not be as high contrast as newer lenses and coatings, so it could be very interesting with b&w film. And it may balance well with higher contrast colour films, too.

Thanks for the info Trius, I will run a roll through shortly, it ceratinly looks in very good condition no marks or dings and the case is very well put together, the top of the front cover is actually hinged!!! so it fits neat. I'm currently waiting for the return of my first B&W through my Yashica Lynx 1.4, I don't know what to expect as the rangefinder is out of alignment, wil soon find out though.

Kippaxaus: Just noticed you are in Oz, and Andrew is a fellow-citizen. Feel free to give him a PM (tell him I sent ya), though I don't recall his exact location. I've heard it's a big country.

Sounds like you'll be having more fun with this rig... :) My guess on the above question is based on similar features on older Pentaxes and Leicas, among others: It's a reminder of film-loading status -- Color film loaded, B&W film loaded, and Empty of film. Some, as the Leica, even have numbers to remind you of the speed of the loaded film, but if the camera has a meter, this would be either redundant or the way to actually set the meter.

Thanks Doug & Trius, I have sent Andrew a pm, yes Doug that makes sense, I just found it hard to read. I will post a couple of pics of the camera shortly and will run a roll through as soon as I can.

Hi Chris

How you going, did you use the camera much, what did you think of it & why did you sell it. by the way mate did you ever do a photo processing course back in the early nineties? I have been looking for the class photo to compare, but I can't find it. I'm sure it was you.

Cheers David

Hi kippaxaus,

I thought this camera is a 35-S which I already have, but anything with a G.Zuiko will perk my ears up :)

Let me know if Andrew doesn't want it. I may be interested, since I'm over the ocean from you, hopefully we can work out a workable shipping solution.
