A friend of mine gave me a mint Trip 35 yesterday that had belonged to his mother but was seldom used. I've been reading up on it and it seems to have two shutter speeds 1/40 and 1/200 that work in A mode. The f-stops are only for flash.

Question: If I select an f-stop but don't have on a flash, does the cam default to 1/40? Is so, that might make it an occasionally useful override of the meter.

Decent lens?

Yes Gene, you can use the Trip 35 that way, I do
I have made available light photos that way, at f2.8 and the default 1/40 sec. on HP 5 film.
just guess focus well.

BTW, that Zuiko lens is very very good. Sharp too.
the british photographer David Bailey, IIRC, like the Trip 35 alot and used it quite a bit.

For the second part, I found the lens was quite good. I started 35mm photography with an Olympus Trip. I then bought my first SLR, an MTL3 with a 50mm Carl Zeiss f2.8 Tessar. The Olympus lens was better than the CZ.

I had a Trip 35 once and gave it to my son probably 15 years ago; don't know what happened to it. In any event, Trip 35 photos I see online always impress me. Amazingly good 4-element lens. I think the coating on the lens must be very good.

xayraa33, thanks for confirming the Trip 35 can be used that way! And it sounds unanimous regarding lens quality. I'll put a test roll through it soon and see how it goes. Pretty little thing!

I, too, managed to get a mint condition Trip 35. It's a beautiful looking camera and the lens is really quality. That said, however, I find that I have trouble with zone focusing. Of course, that's a problem with me rather than the camera!

I've gotten very sharp results with pleasant bokeh from it, though:

the trip was the first camera I ever used, it was my granddad's and he bought it new. I'm looking at it just now and I'm going to load it up with some tri-x to see if it's still OK

Gene, try that Trip 35(on auto) with some Ilford Pan F film or that fine grained(slow) Maco film you been using, for some B&W street shooting on a bright day. You will luv the results.
it always amazes me that such a sharp quality print can be gotten from a tiny, inexpensive common camera, I paid $ 10 CAD for mine at the Toronto Camera show on John street years ago.

Now that's a thought. I have a roll of Pan F and a roll of slow Maco left. Wonder if we'll ever get another bright day, though :)

We will Gene, after the snow will be on the ground.
I look forward to those cold crisp Sunday afternoons,
perfect for a walk around the city( like TO )and the Trip 35 loaded with Pan F film hang around my neck and kept warm inside my parka.
ah, Canada!

Gene: I see a Trip/C35 "shootout" coming ...

Oct. & Nov. have been inordinately overcast and rainy in the GTA/Niagara/WNY area, so right now it feels like we'll never get a bright, crisp sunny day again. I'm thinking maybe when the Leafs win the ... hush my mouff.

But we could be in Vancouver buying bottled water, so we'll count our blessings.

xayraa, snow can be nice. But I hope we see SOME sunshine before then...

Kim, thanks kindly for the link!

Earl, yeah, that's a thought to hold on to... it's always worse somewhere else :) BTW, just got back a roll of C35 results so maybe I'll have some frames to post.

Ho boy, not here. We're under thick cloud cover with chance of flurries, but the forecast shows a run of sunny days starting tomorrow! Yea, Pan F time!

In my photographic hobby I've only made prints larger than 8"x10" from three photos. All three of them came from slides shot in my Trip 35. The gentleman who made the prints said if I'd used a tripod, he probably could have squeaked out a 16"x20". It makes a great travel camera, almost as good as the C35 and much faster to shoot with.
