I was picking up some film today, and as usual I had a look around the used section of my camera store. They had an OM-1 MD for $20 with no dings or dents with a nice little tag that said "note: batteries no longer available" at that price I figured why not, I'll buy one less beer next time I go to the bar and take the bus instead of drive somewhere and I'll be back to even. It even came with a nice little F.Zuiko 50/1.8 silver nose! (not the most prestigious zuiko I know, but you can never have too much glass, maybe it'll make a nice soft portrait lens, or help bring down the contrast a little for B&W).
Anyways, the leather is peeling and worn (I'm thinking maybe some grey griptac would look good with the chrome) the light seals closely resemble black chewing gum and the mirror bumper is... oh it doesn't seem to have much of a bumper anymore... but I'm sure John Hermanson will be able to fix that and solve the battery problem.
But I fired the shutter a few times to listen to the legendary Olympus lack of noise, and than I realized with the mirror up and the lens stopped down in DOF preview, it should pretty much be a leica since the only moving part is the cloth shutter (alright I know its not a Leica but if I can convince myself I got a $20 Leica I'll be very happy!)
Enough stories though, for anyone who has a Leica and an OM-1, could you do a test for me (please!). Can you put the mirror up, hold the DOF preview button the fire the OM-1 and than fire the Leica M, and tell me how much quieter the Leica is (or how different the sound is). I can't seem to find anyone with a Leica in Saskatoon to actually find out how quiet they are so this could be the next best thing.
(Note I've also been looking for Unicorns because with the Legendary Leica following I assume that they make a noise that closely resemble a Unicorn wisper, but I've had no luck finding one of them either).
Thanks,
Chris
