Does anyone know why the OM-3 beeps when you remove or attach a lens?

Is it a theft alarm? 🙂

I'm just wondering why it does this and no other OM does. (sorry, I don't have a manual)

The OM-4 and OM-4T also do, unless you turn the beep off. You do this on the 4/4T by moving the little switch around the LED on the front of the camera. That switch also turns the self-timer on and off...push it one direction, the timer is activated, the other direction turns off the beeps.

Maybe my OM-4T is broken. It doesn't beep and I don't think it even has a detector button on the lens mount.

I will look at it closer tonight.

I thought this was an over exposure warning. You can get the same "beep" if you point a lensed 4T body at a bright source with a combination F-stop/speed, that is beyond range. Removing the lense will definitely make the camera think an over exposure condition exists.

I think the beep is to remind you that the meter reading is cleared when a lens is mounted or dismounted. For example, take two or three spot measurements. Loosen the lens, the camera beeps, and the spot measurements get deleted.

Edit: This was in the original comment, but is not correct: mounting a lens does not cause a beep. "The beep when you put the lens back on is to remind you that you need to re-meter the scene."

There is a black plastic button on the lens mount which, when pressed in via a mounted lens, activates the light meter. The light meter will always remain off if no lens is attached.
The beep simply acts as confirmation.

Thanks guys. I looked at the OM-4T and it does have the black button but mine does not beep when removing or mounting the lens.

It makes sense that the stored meter settings would get cleared.

I wonder if removing the lens would prevent battery drain ?? For example, drilling out a body cap to allow the button to come up and thus, turn off the meter circuit.

Setting the shutter ring to "B" also switches off the meter.

Man I miss my OM3. I recently bought a OM4T champagne model - I hope that satisfies that OM itch for a good while.

its honestly such a light and compact slr.. even as light or lighter than my fed4 w/ jupiter 8. i took it out with a flash to do some street shooting the other day and it felt great in the hands (i have small hands).

Love my OM2n more and more and the very cheap 50mm 1.8 is stunning, asked myself many times why that lens isn´t more expensive 😀

50/1.8 wasn't cheap when made and sold. It's just that millions were made and basically came with 90% of all OM's.

We enjoy the windfall.

I still like the 1.4 over the 1.8

Wow, I just found this thread and must rethink my choice to unload my OM stuff. I wanted to use it to fund a switch to MF but you guys show what incredible things can happen with Olympus plus talent.. I have always had a soft spot for OMs and my very 1st SLR was a OM2S. Why is there not much love for the S ?

I have one. It was my camera for shooting at night in grad school.

still, I found the OM-1 a more workable camera with it's larger shutter speed dial and slightly better finder, in addition to it's somewhat nicer feel.

Absolutely right. I bought a used OM-1 - for about £75 - in 1978 but got a new 50mm 1.8 to go with it and I recall it cost me £44. Quite a lot at the time.

I love the 85/2 and the 50/1.4

I was always a wide-angle guy so short tele's are new to me but that 85 really is a delicious lens.


I've had my 85 only a couple of years as the 75-150 always met my telephoto needs in the past. I never knew why so many people deride the 75-150. I think someone published a rude review about 35 years ago and the poor, maligned 75-150 never escaped it.

I agree that the Zuiko 75-150 is a strong performer. High resolution with moderate contrast that gives pleasingly sharp images without the clinical look of many modern lenses. The relatively poor reputation of the 75-150 could be because many samples have experienced separation of element issues that seriously and adversely affect performance.
