OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

All ye hail the great Maitani !

I am now the proud owner not only of a marvelous red clad Olympus Trip and a nice Olympus 35 SP..... I received today 2 new cameras, an OM1 and an OM 10 in perfect working order.

The OM1 sports a 50mm f:1.4 and the 10 has a 50mm f:1.8 - two fabulous lenses.

Although I bought both on the evil bay, I was delighted to get near perfect cameras with clean and unmarked lenses.

One more thing: anyone knows where I can get a winder access cover for my OM1???
You could try Luton Camera in the UK.
If they turn up for sale, they usually don't come cheaply. Scavenging a broken OM-1 body can be the cheapest option to get such a cover.

Some people fix their cover with a small strip of duct tape, or a tiny drop of lock tight. Although with the second option, I would be careful not to get it into the winder mechanism cog wheels. Letting it dry upright could be a good idea.

Filter thread for Zuikos, esp 28mm f3.5

Good Moring Zuikoholics,
thanks to the OM gas I got from this thread I bought a nice black OM-1.
I had it serviced by Camtech Photo Services ( awesome job, thanks for the suggestion TX Forrester)
Okay finally to my question...
I bought some nice 49mm filters for the 28mm it seems that the filters only "thread on" 1/2 of the way...
Is it the lens?
Is it the filter,filter thread?
Or is it me:(?...
I haven't had trouble with Nikon F's and Leica M's....

Oddly enough, it seems that it's my cheapo Vivitar 135/2.8 that sees the most use, not the 55/1.2 or 21/3.5.

I bought the 50mm f3.5 macro lens a couple months ago and it's very good except:

It's really soft at f3.5. Almost unusable. The glass looks clean, but there was a small bit of oil on the aperture blades that comes and goes.

Has anybody else noticed this? Or is there something wrong with my lens? If so, does this sound like something KEH would accept a warranty return for?

I have never heard the resolving power of the 50/3.5 Macro referred to as "unusably soft" - so we can conclude that you have a faulty lens, I think. It's an extremely good lens at all distances and apertures in my experience - as befits any carefully-designed 'slow' 50mm lens - and even more so for a system whose Macro lenses are known for being legendary.

Have John at zuiko.com take a look and with the oil the lens needs servicing anyway. Looks like it runs about $99.

Has anybody tried Rick Olson's AA battery solution to the OM "battery eaters?" His site does not suggest which batteries to use. Are there AA batteries (preferably rechargeable) that have a discharge rate similar to silver oxide button cells? Fairly steady voltage till close to end of charge.

If the nominal voltage of a pair of cells differ from a pair of sr44 cells, can I find a ASA setting that compensates for how much the meter will misread? I know I have some room for error in negatives, but I miss slides and would like to shoot some again.

that actually is cute, but personally I just use my OM-2sp and pay for lots of extra batteries.

actually fwiw I have carried an OM-1 as a second body for that reason but I cant imagine doing that now since the 2-4 screen really is so good.

Zuikoholic, is that what I've become?
In the last month, I've bought a 50/1.4, 50/2 Macro, 35-70/3.6, 100/2 and 180/2.8.

Most came with a body, so, I need to release some back into circulation. I certainly don't need four OM bodies.

And I'm still on the prowl for a 35-80/2.8 zoom.

Unless I'm shooting something that will take a whole roll, I keep batteries and a penny for loosening the battery cover in a film canister. So for casual shooting, I'm not draining batteries much faster than their self discharge rate.

I asked about rechargeables with a similar discharge as silver oxide, cause I figure over the long run it'll be cheaper. Charging up low batteries the night before is easier than finding a store with the right button cells in stock on the way to where ever I'm going to shoot. And AA's are used in a ton of electronic devices. You can't have too many.:)

Well, perhaps unsuprisingly, it was merely the operator that was faulty. I failed to consider that some objects, seemingly at infinity, are actually just touch closer than that - especially when using it as a 100 mm equivalent lens on a m4/3 body. After using the focus assist magnification some more, I can see now that this lens is still quite sharp at 3.5 :D

Unfortunately for the oil on the blades, having the lens serviced for $100 is more than it is worth, so I will keep using it as-is until I can learn some basic lens repair on lesser optics first.
