I recall that the body of OM bodies (M-1, OM-1 (md, n), OM-2 (md, n) ) is the same as the Leitz Leica M3, the OM-2S and up is a few mm higher.
At least my ex M6 was a some what bigger than my OM-1.
It really depends on how you measure it. Overall, the OM-1 certainly looks more nimble and smaller. It is deeper though, because of the mirror housing and shutter speed ring in front. And even though the top deck sits deeper than the top of a Leica M, the prism top edges out over the Leica. So it is a teeny bit bigger in these two dimensions.
Now if you put 'em in a bucket of water

Now, you guys have to keep a lookout for some Olympus m42/screw mount lenses for me - apparently they're quite hard to find! I really want the 28mm f3.5...

That's quite unusual. You'll have to keep us posted on your experience with it.

Yes it was only produced by Olympus as a stopgap before the OM1 came out. It's not very well regarded on the net, but it's actually really nice in the hand. The 50mm 1.8 lens seems to be quite good, and the operation is very simple and efficient. It's not as schmick to use as the OM's - thats for sure, but it has a definite older style/feel. I like the screw mount lock/stop on the lenses a lot. Even the meter is accurate.
Word on the street is that it was made by minolta - and i've gotta say it does feel quite 'minolta-ish'.

Cute, not a weirdo at all.
That does look like a Minolta SRT if it weren't for that characteristic prism shape.
I once seen a M42 Zuiko 35/2.8 if I recall, it's been a while. I would've gotten it for you.

Folks always talk about the Leica look. Zuiko lenses, too. They just melt away a certain way, OM and Pen lenses alike.
I like that description of the Zuiko 'look'

Just got delivery of a pristine OM2s body. I'm loving it already. Wanted something without a matchstick meter (like the OM2n) for low light and night shots. Metering to Iso 3200 is an added bonus. This fit the bill perfectly. It has a backlight for the LCD meter display. The right price too. Nikon FE was what I'm replacing as my go-to SLR for high ISO. A good camera in it's own right, I just wanted to consolidate my film SLRs and lenses. I use a nikon for digital SLR (d7000) but I'm far more vested in the OM kit lenses for film so it made more sense to keep within the OM line in order to gain better familiarity and hopefully improve my shots. I know this is the right decision.

I put my OM-2sp away today.
Put the 13 screen in my 1, put the strap on the 1 and then put the case on the 1. I love the meter in the om-2 but the smoother advance and the big shutter speed ring as well as the higher magnification finder are making me want to switch. and going full on b&w means I just dont need a super high accuracy OTF or spot meter.
Im glad to have both, though!

I put a motor on my OM2n... The shutter release button is way better. Yes it weighs more and the sound it makes when it winds is terrifying but whatever... The shutter release, the great grip, and the look have their benefits. Plus I can always take it off and slap on a leather everready.

I agree, that was my first thought, too. Very SRT-like. The self-timer lever look quite familiar, too

New to film and an OM-1n
Greetings,
My name is Chris and I may be a Zuikoholic.
This is my first post here and I've really enjoyed browsing this forum, especially this thread. I recently got into film via a Canon G12 in March. The retro rangefinder look and manual controls intrigued me and I was soon exploring street photagraphy with it. This introduced me to rangefinders, which I never really knew about, and I soon acquired a Rollei 35, a Canoett q17 Giii. I was never a film shooter and its been great to get into it. I am glad I found this thread because I was drooling over some used Leicas and Bessas on the internet, but couldn't justify the $$$ right now. I just happened to stop by a secondhand shop in my neighborhood and found a OM-1n for sale with 50mm 1.8 for $30. Wow, just the feel and sound of it clicking in my hand. The magnificent viewfinder and its size and shape. It was like a siren call to me. I walked right in and found it immediately. Its in great shape but I took it in to get overhauled anyway, along with the Rollei. The guy at Camera Techs said it was in excellent shape and one of the best models they've made. I can't wait to get shooting with both of them. I think I'd like to get a 28mm for it. Any suggestions and about what a reasonable deal would be for a used one? I am looking forward to posting some shots soon. Thanks to all,
Chris

get the 28mm f3.5; it's like 40 dollars over at keh. little gem of a lens. if you want to spend up I suggest the 24mm f2.8 over the 28mm f2.8

Thanks Redisburning. That seems to be the one that comes up a lot. I just saw the 28/3.5 at KEH. I think there's also a few at my local camera stores I'll check out. I can't wait to start shooting with it.

Chrisrw - $30 for an OM-1n and 50mm/1.8 lens! That's a super deal. Spend the money you saved on film! As I've said elsewhere on this forum (and maybe this thread), I used an OM-1 and 50mm lens for over 20 years as my only gear. Of course, after that I became a Zuikoholic and now can't carry it all at once on an outing - but just the one camera and lens served me very well.

The best camera is one that still works!
It always makes me chew my lip when I read about someone getting an OM-1 and lens for this price. ^ Being somewhat naive I paid $140.00 for a black OM-1 with a motorwind and 50mm f1.8 from an ebay seller a few years ago. The motorwind never worked and the advance mechanism went south along with the meter shortly after getting the camera. I spent $200.00 getting camtech to bring that camera back to order so now have an OM-1 that owes me around $350.00. Luckily I love the thing to bits and although I regret buying it from eBay for obvious reasons I have no regrets about the actual money I spent getting it up to scratch. It's a joy to use!

Keith, I know the feeling, but I'm sure the shots you've gotten with it have more than justified the cost, no?

For sure ... and the actual tactile experience of using a recently CLA'd OM-1 is right up there with what the Leica fan boys go on about with the M3!
I actually prefer the OM-1 to the M3 I had and with my 50mm f1.2 and a decent screen, the viewfinder is a sight to behold I have to say!
