OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

Argh, I agree that I've become a Zuikoholic, loving every minute of holding my OM and using the 50mm given to me by Keith (thanks a million!).

Now i'm searching for a 24mm/28mm and 85mm to accompany me to my trip to India. :) Anyone selling theirs please let me know, i hate to fall prey to Eprey again:S

Otherwise, i'm having a real good time with the nifty OM:) It never leaves my side, ever. Its compact, small, quiet and a beauty, even my girl is jealous of it. hehehe.

Bump with a shot.

OM-1n black + 85/2 ver. 2

dacookieman,

Mine is not for sale :p, but I HIGHLY recommend 85/2 as your second lens after the 50.

Hehe:) I followed your route, i bought the OM1 to get my feet wet, and I ended up selling away my F3HP and and getting a OM setup. Lovely shot with the 85mm:D

Some dealers on ebay sell Contax to OM adaptors, these are not the more common contax to olym 4/3 adaptors. Anyone tried this adaptor?, that would be great if you could use the great contax/zeiss glass on oly bodies!

Right. All the major manufacturers had their own lens mounts. If you are looking for a lens that fits the Olympus SLRs you need to find either Olympus Zuiko lenses, or the aforementioned third party manufacturers like Tokina,Tamron, Vivitar, Sigma. With those third party lenses you need the ones that say "for Olympus OM mount" or sometimes it'll be abbreviated as "OM" or even "O/OM" when discussing what cameras they will fit. This is very important with regard to third party lenses since those companies made lenses to fit just about each and everyone's lens mount.

Generally speaking, the Olympus Zuikos will perform better than the third party lenses as the third party companies usually manufactured for a lower price point. But, there are also different lines within some third party companies, such as "Vivitar Series 1" which are better than everyone's value line, and some say as good as anything out there.

But also beware that you should know exactly what condition any lens you are considering is in due to the fact that anything could have happened to them in the 35 years since some were made, and some amateur could have disassembled and reassembled it, or they could have stored it improperly such as in a damp environment, etc.

Now i'm searching for a 24mm/28mm and 85mm to accompany me to my trip to India.

28mm Zuiko lenses are plentiful, and you should be able to get either an f/2.8 or f/3.5 for not very much money at all (I've had both, and they're both great - I stuck with the f/2.8). There are many to be found on the famous auction site, though I appreciate you don't really want to go there - but dealers should have them too.

The 24/2.8 is an excellent lens, but harder to get hold of and quite a bit pricier than a 28 - and if it's your first wideangle, I'd suggest a 28 might be a better all-rounder (though that's my preference - for SLR work I think a 50/28 combination is essential - your preferences might differ).

The 85/2 is also a very fine lens indeed - I'd go as far as to say that the 24 and the 85 are possibly my favourite in the Zuiko line - but it's not a cheap lens. They don't appear very frequently, and when they do they tend to go for quite high prices (I think I paid about £120 for mine, and I considered that a good price in the UK).

Have you thought about the 100 f/2.8 instead? It's also an excellent lens, and usually costs a lot less than the 85.

Another lens I'd suggest you consider is one of the 35-70 zooms. I have the f/3.5-4.5 version, and it's a great little travel lens - barely larger than a 50.

Best,
Alan

I really like my Zuiko 28mm f/3.5 -- I had no need for low light performance and the price was very good for a great condition lens with the hood and warranty, I just had to bite

Thanks for the suggestions and recommendations, well, i'm open to options and the 28mm might as well save me some change for a short tele as well :) I was eyeing the 28mm f2.8 or 28mm f3.5 initially. Yeah, those are aplenty on ebay, but after a bad experience there, i'd rather get it from RFF'ers if possible, my experience here has always been very pleasant.

I did look at the 100mm, but they seem to go around the same price as the 85mm?

I'm with you regarding RFF over ebay! Every trade, sale or purchase I've Had with RFF'ers have been great. As a matter of fact I have a trade posted in the classifieds offering my Rolleiflex and other stuff for OM lenses...:)

Ahh yes, i have seen your WTB, not trying to vy with you though, im just looking for a wide prime for my trip:) hehe. And you're right, the kind of buying experience in this forum is fantastic, its a far cry from my local forum and ebay. The people here really stand behind their items, and make sure you are truly satisfied with your purchase:) love it.

@dacookieman: you might be seeing the 100/2, the 100/2.8 is significantly cheaper. Keh has the 100/2.8 EXC for $172, while the 85/2 in the same condition is $349, there's one BGN for $199 which is very good price IMO.

I think we are appealing to different folks, and you may have better luck than me as folks seem more willing to sell than make an exchange. I hope you are able to find the lenses you want before you go on your trip, and if anyone out there is wavering on weather to sell or trade I hope they sell to you as I have no deadline and can wait.....

Just succumbed and ordered an 85/2 from KEH, to go with my 35/2, 50/1.4, and the 135/2.8 with the newly dented hood (watch where you walk in the woods).

Vicky: That boat on the river shot is lovely. What's the location?

Hey guys, KEH currently has a BGN grade 85/2 for $189. That is well worth the purchase price, trust me.

OMZ 85/2 @ f4 (or thereabouts) on Reala:

Oops, looks like Bill might have snatched it up! Hope it wasn't the only copy.

Nope. I sprang for an LN- copy. Still several others there today.

FYI: I had to phone KEH because their order page kept crashing on me. They told me they installed new software yesterday and are working to get it fixed.

Yeah, I saw their site layout had changed.

My 85/2 (along with my 28/2) is currently with Dr. Hermanson. It has some haze/fungus on a rear element that he can hopefully clear up. Once I get those back, I have a black OM-1n I need to send off. $35 at a camera show, and it's a later model (mid 80's I reckon). Needs light seals and a new motor drive cover, and the lower shutter speeds are off, but this one is a real peach--minimal brassing, minimal sctratching, bright viewfinder. Should clean up real nice.

I just got a 21/3.5 that I'm dying to use. Haven't had a real chance to get out and shoot, but this weekend the missus and I are going to Austin--can't wait to put it to the test!

Hmm, they must be getting pricey these days - I got mine for about half the price of my 85.

But yes, I'd certainly agree with getting one from an RFFer if possible.

Best,

nah, i just saw a 100/2.8 boxed go for 60-70 euros on ebay.uk a few days ago! Good luck finding a 85/2 at that price range on any ebay!
