OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

I got an OM2n w/50mm 1.8 not long ago and I like it alot. Now I´m looking into getting a longer lens, maybe the 100mm and one wideangle like the 28 or maybe even the 24 🙂

A couple of days back I won a Zuiko 21/3.5 on Ebay for £111. I was slightly nervous about the deal because they often go for three times that amount but it arrived today and it's in excellent condition. Yee ha: Just had to share that!

Yeah, I was watching that and was surprised at the price myself. I said to my wife 'I wouldn't be surprised if that's went to someone on RFF'. 😀

Congrats on a cracking lens at a good price. Enjoy.
 
No way, £111 for a 21mm f/3.5?! Not sure what I'd do with such a wide lens but at that price there is no way I could say no, I'd find a use!

I have come around to the thinking that all my OM gear was an excellent investment, the most expensive item being the 100mm f/2.8 at a massive £79 (recently got the metal hood for it, which has made it better still).

That said, my 28mm f/3.5 is still working a treat, I paid a silly £35 for it with the metal lens hood and it's an absolute joy to shoot. Even at f/3.5 handheld the results always keep me pleased:

I had an interesting encounter yesterday. I was taking a portrait of Pete Winkelman, chairman of MK Dons just before a football match and was introduced to various peeps on the sideline of the pitch, including one guy who even though had a camera and I was told we had to wear the blue photographer bibs seemed to get away with just wearing all black, from the beret down to the black turtleneck jumper etc. That kinda look you know "I'm an artist don't you know?!" Seeing my two rather battered OM2ns (having just dropped the chrome one, AGAIN, for like the 3rd time, this time from about 3ft on to concrete...) his look was priceless, absolute contempt for me that old muggins was allowed into the fray.

And I have come of the opinion that the best thing about these OMs is that in this digital age, a film camera that is teeny gives you (or maybe just me) something you can't buy, contempt -- I don't get taken too seriously and that's the most priceless thing, people loosen up so much or just let me get on with it. It's very bizarre but it works for me!

Lovely picture!

I keep banging on about this, but the 'Joy of Olympus OM' for me is how cheap everything is (with the exception of the OM-3 which, in my view, isn't worth it anyway). I got a 135mm 3.5 from Ebay for £16, for example, and it's a super little lens.

But I take your point about unobtrusiveness, though I would say nobody takes photographers terribly seriously nowadays unless they are carrying a DSLR the size of a small house.

Just got this as new OM-1, in chrome. Not sure but I think maybe chrome suits the older tradition better ?. One day must show all my OM stuff !

I thought that until I got a slightly brassed black OM-1 ... didn't take me long to decide to get rid of the chrome one! 😀

Chrome, black, who cares ... they are still the best SLR on the planet. 🙂
 
That's a nice pair. OM in Silver is very smart looking but don't make me decide which one looks better. No sooner do I get a black camera that I lust for the silver one and vice versa.
 
Thanks, how do I attach a full size image as opposed to a thumbnail ?.
Re black, I lusted after a black camera and in fact have a black Kiev4, Nikon FG as well as the OM-1. Wont be happy till I get a black OM-2, jeez I got it real bad I must stop looking for film cameras !!.
There is just something about a chrome early OM-1 as Keith says they are pure, like an M2 only better (ducks for cover).

Ron, instead of uploading the image as an attachment you gotta host it somewhere. You can keep a RFF gallery as your host location and then when attaching an image in a post you copy the URL of that image using the insert image icon when you write a reply. That is the only icon with colour in it below.(See quick reply box) . It's a similar situation at most image hosting locations but Flickr is a little different.

With Flickr accounts you should open an image in your flickr and then find the BB code (it's a link button -drop down arrow on the top of the image). You choose a size like 'medium' then copy the full BB code into your post whenever you want to attach an image. It's really quite simple as difficult as it might sound.

I'm partial to black.
All my OMs are black (2x OM1, 1x OM2, 1x OM3). Bought and sold plenty chrome ones though 😛
 
I've always been partial to the chrome OM's myself. Probably just the classic look that I like. My OM-4t is the exception, in champagne rather than chrome.
 
The chrome OM-1 I sold after I got a black one was genuinely mint ... I sometimes wonder if it had ever actually been used. It was an eBay bargain ($50.00 with a 50mm f1.8) and when it arrived I noticed everything felt really tight ... the advance had quite a lot of resistance but after a few rolls of film it freed up considerably. I supect this camera had sat somewhere for forty years or so just doing nothing except drying out a little ... it probably would have benefited from a trip to John at camtech.

Man, this thread just keeps on going! There's a lot of good info and some great shots here too.

I've been shooting with my OM-1 for the last year and a half and not much else. I have a couple of other cameras, but can't seem to put my black, and brassed, OM-1 down long enough to use the others.

I usually shoot Arista Premium (Kodak Tri-X) but shot two rolls of Kodak Portra this past weekend at a street festival in a neighborhood not far from mine. I'd almost forgotten how good color can look rendered with the Zuikos. I've got to save up some money for more of that Portra, or start drinking less beer!

Those are realy nice photos ... Portra is a lovely film.

You're right about this thread ... it's phenominal IMO. A brilliant resource and a great place for any Zuikoholic to hang out. 🙂

Thanks Keith.

That Portra does make me want to shoot some more color. And I couldn't agree more about this place being a great resource and place to hang out. It was some of the other threads, including yours, here on RFF that pointed me in the right direction towards the OM system.

I do miss some of the convenience afforded by digital, but there's something about film and the OM's that makes it hard for me to switch. I'm waiting to see what Olympus comes up with next, particularly the rumored professional digital Pen later this year, but I don't think I'll ever give up my OM-1 and Zuiko primes completely even if I do start shooting digital.
