i have decided it is the zuiko 50/1.8 with which i have fallen in love.

yes, the OM-1s handle beautifully, and they fit my hands, my brow and my eye perfectly. and that viewfinder.

all of that would be for naught, though, if the lens were not exactly what i have been looking for. oh, i like the zuiko 28/2.8, too, which renders just like the 50, but i am mostly a 50mm guy.

there. i've said it. the zuiko 50/1.8 suits my vision. :)

I can hear where you're coming from. Unless (one makes one believe that) one needs a larger maximum aperture, the 50/1.8 is a might fine 50mm lens; very inexpensive, small, light, sharp, and reasonably fast in terms of aperture.

There is something magical about a 50mm, I can walk around all day with it and never feel I should have packed a 28mm or 135mm. There will be shots where I feel I could do with, but never regret. I have the 1.8 and I think its better than most of my other 50mm lenses apart from the OM 50mm 1.4 and there is something quite nice about the Konica 50mm 1.4 on my Autoflex. I could live happily with just a 50mm I use it or equivalent 99% of the time.

I like a 50mm too but over the last few years have managed to get a lot more comfortable with a 35mm ... I think it's mainly to do with the fact that I use a 35mm Zeiss almost exlusively on my D700 for the paid work I do and I've learned to appreciate the versatility of the 35mm field of view.

I have an early 35mm f2 Zuiko that doesn't really excite me ... it's fairly low in contrast and to my eyes the sharpness falls away noticably towards the edges of the frame. I'm torn between getting one of the later 35mms to see if they are noticably better or maybe just spending the extra money and get the 40mm f2 ... which is expensive but compared to Leica offerings, not really! And I've heard it's a brilliant lens.

Any opinions here?
 
keith: the 40 interests me as well, but a little steep. so does the 50/1.4. i don't know why. the 50/1.8 and 28/2.8 are doing exactly what i want combined with the ap 400 and hc-110.

TX: the staggerwing museum is in tullahoma, tenn., near where i grew up.

Yes, compared to the OM Zuiko f/2.8 lenses, the f/2.0 offerings are more expensive, but in comparison with anything with the names Leica or Leitz, they are serious bargains. The 21/2.0 is more than equal my 21/3.4 Super Angulon which is my benchmark for the 21mm focal length. Both the 21/2 & 40/2 are so good that if they ever were stolen I would break the bank replacing them.

Another kit I enjoy for alternate looks is the pairing of the 28/2 & 50/1.4.

Seriously, if you can borrow a Canon 5D II, get an OM to EOS adapter ring and do some test shots, you may find your D700 spending more time on a shelf. You are comfortable doing manual focus with the D700, I find it even easier (mf) with the 5D II.

I've thought about the Leitax adapter to fit my Zuikos to my Nikon ... I think the IQ of the D700 and the unusual qualities of the 50mm f1.2 Zuiko would be a magic combination.

I need another DSLR body like I need a hole in the head! :p

I have to say I hope like hell that Olympus never makes a full frame digital body that's compatible with the old Zuikos ... I think the prices of certain lenses would go through the roof!
 
I have been happy with the 28/2.8 and even the 28/3.5 over the years.

But I am getting an itch to see what that 28/2 is all about.

I have a 24/2.8 and like it a lot. Thankfully I don't feel compelled to chase 24/2

For 50mm I adore the 1.4 in any version.

With respect to "another DSLR body...", to quote Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain." I got a 5D2 on a lark in the week following Christmas, I got what I thought was a deal. That purchase was funded by the sale of a D3 I just wasn't using.

Fast forward 5 months and now I'm struggling with the functional issue that I LOVE using the OM bodies and the 5D2, all and only with my OM Zuikos, and an emotional connection I still have with many old manual focus Nikkors I've had for a long while and the D700 for them. For the first couple months this year I regularly went back and forth between the digital bodies. Of late I have used only the 5D2, often forgoing my pair of M8.2's, too.

With respect to low light IQ, I feel the D700 & 5D2 are about equal up to ISO 4000, by ISO 6400 the Nikon is better. The Canon doesn't fall apart @ 6400, it just isn't quite as good.

Film is a much easier issue (for me), it is either an OM or a M, period, end of discussion.

Can you tell me which adapter you use? I recently traded my 7d for a 5dmk2 and I've noticed it needs 1/3 to 1 1/3 stops more exposure with the same Fotodiox chipped adapter I had been using. Especially if I stop down to f4 or f5.6. This is with the 50/1.4 and the 135/2.8.

Maybe, but what baffled me is: Where is the self-timer?

OM-1 has it, why not the uber-advanced OM-3 ? :confused:

I noticed that but thought nothing of it as I supect this camera was marketed at photographers who wouldn't really miss it. It was always a high end camera that was going to cost a lot and maybe the omission was to keep that cost down a little?

The same with mirror lock up possibly?
 
And just so none of you get the wrong idea, that I'm not actually a Zuikoholic when I post a question about a horrible DSLR.. Yes. Yes I am... In fact, a filmaholic, with a few Yashicas and a Hexar thrown in for good measure.

Absolutely. The 21/2 is why I was emotionally able to sell my M3 kit, consisting of SA, DR 50 and 90 Summicron. None of my Zuiko 50s quite match the DR in all respects, but they have their own strengths.

Again, yes. Well, I don't have the 28/2, but the 28/2.8 is truly great. And paired with the 50/1.4 it is as complete a minimal kit as one could want.

I do agree with Keith that a 35 is a perfect one-lens solution on an OM. I have my eye on a later 35/2, depending on how cheaply it can be had. But the 35/2.8 is extremely good, IMO, and I can live with that for now.
 
Goofing with that 21/2 tonight at dinner. It seems to crop to about 28 on the Nex 5. Just perfect for all manner of indoor stuff. Including the ubiquitous Japanese dinner shot..

I think the only people who are clueless about the potential of a full-frame E-5 class body with the sensor from OM-D is ... Olympus.

They *will* wipe the floor with a big chunk of Canon's market if they pull that off. Maybe Nikon's too, but I like Nikon, so I don't wish it on them :)

Same goes for Pentax. I think both Oly and Pentax are the most pig-headed members of the "Japan's big five" camera manufacturers.
