not every 1.1+ 50/1.4 is better than every silvernose 50/1.4; I know this from my own personal experience. still if I were buying one I would go later because it gives you a better chance of getting a lens that is usable wide open. yes, the optical formula as well as the coatings are different.

at any rate even a soft 50/1.4 will let you make nice pictures if you stop it down a bit

Well, from my own testing, my 50/1.4 with serial 740xxx is sharp enough wide open. It actually surprises me that I get very sharp images wide open in low light conditions. Please excuse this example which I did not develop so well.

A friend gave me a OM-1 with a 50mm / 1.4 lens. Not expecting much I popped a roll off Tri-X in it I started shooting. Turns out I really like this camera and lens :D

I am certain I have researched these before, but I can't remember!

1. What is the default diopter of a stock OM?

2. Regarding the potentially marred (foam) prism of an OM-1, does an OM-2 prism fit as a replacement?

Today was a good OM-day. :D A guy in the area gave away for free three OM-cameras for parts.

So I ended up getting:
- chrome OM-2, power switch has been broken off, works although stuck in AV; fixing the switch seems to be a pain, judging from the service manual and exploded diagram
- clean, functional OM-10, all it needed was new battery (sadly, no manual adapter included)
- dead OM-40

But what I've been most happy about, two lenses were included:
- a sweet 50/1.8, the old F.Zuiko version - I forgot how beautiful these silver noses look on a chrome body
- aaaaaand a pristine 50/1.4 G.Zuiko :) Not bad getting one of these for free. This was basically the reason why I picked up the lot.

Now i've got 'em all; 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 50/1.2.
I am very curious to see, how the 50/1.4 will perform.

As I have three functioning single-digit OMs and an 'mij' 50/1.8, I'll make some friend happy by gifting the OM-10 and F.Zuiko 50/1.8 to them. :)
 
Great. Now I had to pick up an OM-4Ti with 50/1.4 (Serial 1.0xx.xxx).
It is time to get rid of some other system now. Most likely the Contax RTS :)

Bought it, fed it with Delta 400 and went out for a walk. It is weather sealed, after all? :)

This camera feels much better built than my A-1 and AE-1, and the thing that really sold me was the brass construction and black paint. My A-1 is a black model, but unfortunately when it rubs through the brass the plastic begins to show, which just looks ugly. I'm so happy this is solid construction. Here's a shot of it taken on my other new camera, the iPhone 5 :) I'm so happy with that camera as well, and soon it may be the only digital body I own!

Man I love this thread.

Even though Olympus abandoned us years ago, we still can enjoy those wonderful OM cameras and lenses for years to come until they disintegrate altogether.

I chuckle thinking my great-great grandchildren might even get a kick out of using them 100 years from now.

Hi burancap, in regards to your second question, I don't think the OM-2 does, but the OM-10, 20, 40, etc is a straight swap.

Yes the prism of a OM-2(n) will fit the OM-1 perfectly. i did it on my om-1.
As for the first question, i do not know the default diopter, but with the eyecup 1 you can add different diopter +/- glasses, i think they hard to find.

The prism is purely cosmetic. The tiny amount of creep is there, but, oh well! I will save that project for a rainy day after sourcing some dead 2's for parts. Thanks!

Regarding the diopter, the best answer I have is -0.5 -the same as Leica M's. Based on that, I ordered a Nikon 2945 and will report back with results!
 
Even though the current damage is small, you should take that as a warning to go ahead and get that old foam out of there. It will grow worse over time.

And if you clean the contamination off your prism, it can even improve the view.

Get to it now and you may never need to replace that prism.

That is a very good point -and I should have asked!

So, the prism IS apparently cleanable. Any suggestions for methods, materials, etc...

My creep is truly trivial and it would be great if I could just "wipe" it up, even if not a 100% solution.

Also, did the 1 ever stop suffering from this during their production run? Did any other models suffer from this?

BTW, I have been spending a good bit of time with my OM gear recently and while it may be preaching to the bar, they really are wonderful! The black paint finish is really beautiful!

My thanks to this thread as well! I may never have known.
 
I'm pretty happy today. I just bought a Zuiko 35/2.8 from an ebay buy-it-now.

I've never had a 35mm fixed length lens for my OMs.

I have had the 28/3.5 since 1975 for my wide-angle and added 28/2.8 in the 1980s.

For Zuiko 'primes', I have 24, 28's, 50's, the 85 and now a 35.

One day I will cough up the dough for a 28/2 and maybe a 35/2. They are really nice.

But for now, I await the 35/2.8 that's on its way home! :)
