OM, I've become a Zuikoholic!

Got an om2 last night, I know this topic is well covered, but can anyone tell me what version of the 50 1.8 is best? I read something about ones with a serial # between 1.1 and 1.4 being good, and also the made in japan ones, can someone tell me what the differences are between those 2?

Of what you read, about the 50 f1.8 it's the latter reference about the Made in Japan.
The serial numbers +1.1M are for the 50mm f1.4
 
I have a clean-as-a-whistle, mint condition 50/1.8 silver nose that I have never even used yet. It came on a very early non-MD OM-1 (which I also haven't used yet due to needing new light seals).

I am going to slap that silver-nose on my OM-3 right now and go shoot a roll. I just gotta know how it does.

New OM-1 Owner with Questions

Hi, this is my first post here. I have a few questions that I haven't been able to answer myself by searching around the net.

My dad recently gave me his Olympus kit. This included his OM-1 (ser #192xxx). This is a very early production, no? I was really looking forward to having Camtech overhaul it, so I could start using it alongside my OM-2n. But then I noticed on Camtech OM-1 page he says "I recommend any used 1N over a plain OM-1 of any production date."

That kind of bummed me out. By overhauling my Dad's camera would I be putting good money after bad, so to speak? It's in good condition cosmetically. My dad takes good care of his stuff.

Also, I read in thread that the OM-1 should have it's wiring upgraded to take a different battery. (I'm paraphrasing). Is this necessary? The reason I ask is that Amazon sells a battery that claims to work in the OM-1.

One other question, sorry 🙂
When I press this OM-1 shutter button the release sounds really "springy", and kind of loud in my opinion. It sounds hollow and tinny like there's no damping. Please tell me this is not normal...is it? My OM-2n shutter release sounds smooth and pleasing to my ears.

Hi Cameron,

Welcome! There are absolutely no problems with the mechanicals of the earliest OM-1's - John (from Camtech) is referring to the better electricals, and general minor improvements that may make for a more reliable camera. If you are sentimentally attached to a particular OM-1, please use it with gusto!

With regards to the smoothness, an OM-1 (any OM-1) in good condition makes for an incredibly smooth camera. The smoothest OM I have ever handled was a very beat-up, old plain OM-1 with a broken meter. It felt like my Leica M3 (almost). I suspect yours is simply in need of a good service - lubricants dry up and dust works its way into the mechanicals over the decades.

Send it to John, and you should experience a very smooth camera once you are done 🙂 I've made some of my favourite prints from negatives shot with a super-smooth, plain OM-1 🙂

Now about lenses....

28mm 2.8 or 35mm 2.8 ?
The 28 seems to be newer and the 35 has the chrome nose.

Also getting a OM2N....and so it begins.

I have all three, 28/2.0, 2.8 and 3.5. The 2.0 i superb, but the 2.8 is indeed the compact one. It is a great companion. The only downside is that, someday, someday, you want to have the 2.0 as well ...
 
Zuiko 135mm f3.5 MC version?

Zuiko 135mm f3.5 MC version?

Hi, does anyone know if some of the Zuiko 135mm f3.5 are multi-coated? I recently read a blog that mentioned this lens was only ever made single coated. However, my lens ring (ser # 39xxxx) is printed with "Zuiko", not "E.Zuiko". And that's one of the tell-tale signs of being multi-coated, no? So that got me to thinking...do I have an MC version? Sorry if dumb question 😱
