Hi,

I know that John Hermanson (zuiko.com) in the U.S. is 'the guy' to send OM gear to, but with the current exchange rate and his lengthy turnaround times, I'd prefer to try something closer to home. I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) or Toronto. Though I'm willing to send them to other locations in Canada.

I searched online a bit and found someone on another forum recommending Precision Camera in Winnipeg. http://www.camerarepair.ca/. Anyone use their services?

Or should I just bite the exchange and time bullets and send them to John?

Thanks!

Colin
Bob at Precision is not doing anymore film cameras. Was talking with him yesterday; and he is real busy with the falling apart digitals.

It really has gotten to the point that, at least for the common lenses, it is less expensive, and certainly quicker, just to buy another lens, rather than to have one serviced.

Roman Gutman in Thornhill works on older film equipment of all sorts. While I haven't had OM gear serviced by him, I think he's idea. You can reach him at gutmanrom@hotmail.com , but he might take a while to respond.

Unfortunately CamTech in Hamilton just closed this past autumn (I just found out googling their name). That would've been my second recommendation.

There's also a repair place downtown that I didn't have the best experience with: Toronto Camera Service (www.torontocameraservice.com), but that was due to a Minolta AF lens with a serious delamination issue. Nobody seems to be able to tackle that one.

Thanks for the replies.

It's too bad Precision will no longer accept film gear...we need more capable repair services, not less.

I think I'll send Roman an email. Do you know if he does virtual estimates?

I came across Toronto Camera Services and they seem to have some lackluster reviews...I think I'll avoid.

Colin, yes I was very surprised when talking with Bob that he was out of Film camera repairs. He did a Linhoff 4x5 lens for me back in the 90's. Excellent tradesman, and very, very reasonable in his pricing.

Toronto Camera Services recently did a strap lug replacement for me on my Nikon F.
They were slower than I'd like (one month) and their telephone rep. never called me back after promising to after I asked for timelines, but in the end the work was well done (they replaced both lugs instead of just the one I'd asked to be replaced, and used new lugs rather than stripping old ones from a parts body I took to them) and the camera also got a CLA for the $160.00 they quoted me.
They weren't Nikon Canada, but they're local and the work was well done in the end.

I had my Nikon FE2 CLA as well as a maching 50mm 1.4 at Toronto Camera Services

They were slow but the price wasnt too bad. Happy with the results.

Sadly our options are getting thinner, after Roger closed Camtech's storefront wound up having a heart attack and died in hospital. Toronto Camera Services does good work but they do take their time, and I've never used Roman up in Thornhill.
