OM2 Top Cover Removal

I used a small pair of circlip pliers bought from harbor freight to remove the top black piece off, i too had no luck getting that piece off with a rubber eraser or cork. Just be careful with the pliers because it is very easy to slip and scrape off some of the black finishing.

A spanner wrench is the best tool with the small pointer tips.

This untwists normally. That is, in a counterclockwise direction.

Some cameras (Pentax comes to mind) use a reverse thread that untwists in a clockwise direction.

You also will need to remove the small collar around the socket where the hot shoe is attached. Again, a spanner wrench works best.

As well, remove the crank on the rewind post (open the back, stick a small screwdriver into the fork and twist the crank in a counterclockwise direction).

Under the rewind crank is another circular plate that is best removed with a spanner wrench (of course). Now that I think about it, maybe it has just two screws under there. I was working on several cameras over the weekend, and I might be wrong about this part here.

Under the top deck you'll probably find some very sticky black foam that should be removed and replaced.

Be aware - the black plastic part within the winder cap (with two small holes for the spanner) can separate from the metal cap below - in fact this makes it easier as the spanner holes in the metal part of the cap are larger and offer more grip. If not concerned about cosmetics, just carefully prisw the black plastic part away, and work on the metal part, as other have described above. You can glue it back later with a little dab of contact adhesive. I had to do this with two cameras.

I think I'll butcher it with a pair of circlip pliers. I can't find a stockist for spanner wrenches in the UK.

In my attempt to remove the wind lever with a pair of picks, there are some scratches. I think I'll just cover it up with a coordinating piece of leather.

My camera shoots at 1/60 when there's no battery in, in all modes and the shutter speeds are all messed up (when batteries are installed). Anyone have any idea on how to rectify this?? The meter gives the same reading as my fully working OM2n so I assume that part's fine.
