I seem to be a magnet for photo hand-me-downs and such, and I seldom refuse them, and I've made good use of a few of them, actually.

Well, yesterday I picked up my latest "come get it or it goes in the trash" acquisition, and I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised, so far, at least.

It's a Kodak DX-4530 P&S.

I would be very interested if anybody here has any experience with this. Camerapedia has nothing (so far).

It was described to me as "It worked fine but the battery cover will not close anymore" and "We never got the base for it, so we always had to take it in to have prints made."

I said I would take it, and if I didn't want it I would give it to SA or GW.

I think I may keep it and (try to) fix it and even use it.

The battery cover will not stay shut because the little tab that locks it has broken off. If I decide to use it semi-regularly, it looks like with some handiwork and TLC, I can probably fix that. I now have it held shut with a piece of duct tape, which amazingly does kind of coordinate with the finish of the camera. :) :)

The "base" she was talking about is referred to in TFM which "docks" it to a computer or printer, but there's a USB cable included, and I was able to retrieve 150-some photos from it and put them on a CD for them. ("Found digital photos", kids, dogs, neighbors, and one of who I think is her BF in a state of undress on the couch!) :) :) :)

Anyway, I tried a few slop shots yesterday to see how it works, and I actually like it from the first impression anyway. It's 5 megapixel, but I was able to see amazing detail in Photoshop. I'm sure I could make a sharp 13x19 off of it! The look and feel of the photos seems to be somewhat similar to what I would expect with Fuji 100 or 200.

Does anybody have any first-hand experience with this camera? She says it's about 5 years old, and some of the reviews on the web date from 2003, so I know it's somewhat old for a digital.

I like it because it has a true coupled optical viewfinder, a nice big knob for the main controls, only a few buttons, and none of them teeny-tiny or confusing. TFM says it's a 3:1 optical zoom and a digital zoom out to 10x. The optical part of the zoom seems very smooth.

Anyway, I think I'm going to try this as my "carry everywhere" camera for a while and see if I like it.

Anybody here have any experience with this model?
