I occasionally found this completed deal on ebay,

http://cgi.ebay.com/LEICA-SUMMARON-...7QQihZ016QQcategoryZ30063QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

as the seller described "Cosmetically clean; no major marks except for one gold mark on the M bayonet mount ring on the back."

I am pretty sure that it's a M3 summaron. The connection part of the goggle just been removed, that;s why the "one gold mark on the M bayonet mount ring on the back" left. A fine work earn extra US$250 , nice pay.

As I know the lens won't focus correctly without the goggle. So it's terrible for hte buyer.

I am not againt the seller. He may not aware it. .......

That's nuts! The summaron isn't worth that kind of money except to some collector and only if new in the box. It just shows some people have more money than brains.

Looking at it again I think you're right that the goggles have been milled off. Anyway it's got dings in the metal and marks. The guy that bought that is nuts!

Presumably if it is an M3 goggled Summaron, it should still focus properly as the lens mount is unchanged but it will bring up the 50 mm finder frames in the M4, M4, M5...etc?

Sorry, that's the M2/M4 Summaron as described, and an excellent lens. One picture is of the top of the lens (with the distance scale index mark) which is where there would be a flat section for the goggles to attach. And it went for a fair price, probably a bit over the odds.

There is an even more lucrative scam when it comes to the 35mm 8 element summicron. The M2 version (ungoggled) goes for say $1500+. The m3 version (goggled) goes for say, half that amount. When the googles are removed the lens focuses correctly only at infinity. The internal helix is cut differently on the googled version. The same can be said for the two versions of the 35mm summiron. Again, the price of the ungoogled lens is 2x that of the m3 version with eyes.

As I learn, they won't focus correctly without the goggle.
