Omg, leica?

Every photographer acts surprised when I tell them I shoot with a Leica.

Why is that? It's just a tool, like any other camera.

I've gotten this reaction a few times when I've been out shooting with my Leica D or F (Black II and III ).

The reaction usually comes from younger guys (under 40) who have probably only seen pictures of these cameras in books.

My usual response to the question "You still shoot with that?" is:

" Why wouldn't I ?" 😀

Usually, the only notice I get from "old timers" is a wry smile and shake of the head... 🙄

Luddite Frank

It amazed (well, amused) me when I was carrying my CL. Some lady said "is that a Leica?" I told her it is a Leica but made by Minolta blah blah. She sounded a bit disappointed and said "so it's not a real leica?" I told her "It IS a real Leica, it's just a bit different from other 'real' M Leicas." Then she sounded excited again.

Later she told me she was a professional pet photographer using Nikon, Canon and Leica M8, super excited about M9, and went on to lecturing the beauty of using different tools for different purposes after hearing I'm not a pro.

People where I live don't notice my Leica.

So, I have had a special hat, made for me by Leica. There is a clamp on it that holds my Leica, and a fairly large sign under it that says in big bold letters "LEICA!".

My friends say I look like a idiot, and it is so heavy that it hurts my neck, but I don't care.

don't worry!....there's a guy on this forum walks around with a toy monkey on his shoulder! 😀

A Leica is a camera whose users are sometimes tools (me included)
.....When I met another RFFer we had our own version of secret handshakes and rituals.
So an RF is sometimes quite enough

I do get the "Is that a leica?" question often, usually after they've seen me take a picture, then they ask if it still works 🙂
And then they ask if you can still get film for it 😀

Darn, it's been a while since I've been to my Leica-Anonymous meetings in Trius' Cellar.

Can you still get film for that is THE question to ask nowadays😛

I have fallen into the trap, when starting to elaborate on the fact that film blahdiblah etc, people's eyes turn dull and they start to gaze into the distance. And then I remember, Oh yeah right, they don't really care...

Two weeks ago I visited London and had coffee in the small back room café at Aperture Photography, and it was really nice to for a change talk camera with some knowledgable chaps over there, George and Shamoz, how are ya!?😎

The fact that you feel the need to make this post intimates that this is exactly the reaction you're looking for, which makes you sort of an automatic wanker, honestly.

If it were "just a tool, like any other camera" why would you pay the price premium? Either you don't really mean that, which means you're lame for saying it--or you do mean it, and you just paid for the brand name. So, are you a liar or a dilettante who is perversely desperate for approval from those with less money?

🙄

Posts like this are what makes this forum the crappiest photo forum on the internet.

Luckily, there are more than enough threads to make it the best photo forum on the internet, as well.

People where I live don't notice my Leica, either. That's because I live in 'in conscious' California. The only comment is, "Why don't you use a Canon?'

What premium? It cost less than the film Nikon body I was shooting with previously.

If that's true, then it must be that you're using one or another of the "classic" Leica cameras, in which case their "astonishment" (if it even exists) is about you using a "classic, old camera" not a "Leica" per se. No?

(Which makes this, of course, just a third sort of lame that wasn't apparent as an option from your initial message.)

I don't mean to be personally offensive or anything, but seriously: what is this other than a "look at me, I have a Leica" comment? If it's more than that, you didn't communicate it.
