On Leica Lens Caps

Great story, Tom, and instructional as well! I put my lens caps in the box the lens came in. From there, it's filters and/or hoods. Except if I send the lens off for service, then I'll wrap up the lens just with the original cap.

Those Heavystar hoods work well and the common 52mm Nikon center pinch caps fit nicely. But I am checking out Roger's Hood Hats right now....

I also use the caps that come with the lenses. Have not lost one yet. Lens caps aren't nearly valuable or important enough to protect by leaving them at home.

Does anyone worry about burning a hole in their shutter. Seems like walking around with out a cap on, on a nice sunny day could lead to trouble. How easy it is to burn a hole through the shutter?

Unless you leave the camera pointed at the light source for an extended period, I wouldn't worry about it. While I was with CCG in VN, I never damaged a shutter cloth. Not saying it can't be done, but if you are moving around(no matter the f/stop) you are not likely to damage anything.

With metal shutters, there seems no worry about pinholes. I've seen half a dozen pinholes in a Nikon S3 shutter that had sat propped up in a west-facing camera shop show window for extended time.

There've been discussions on the subject here before, and a test on some FED cameras. It seems not to take long to burn a hole if the conditions are right, just a matter of some seconds. I wouldn't set a cloth-shuttered RF camera down on an outside table at a bar/restaurant with the lens pointing anywhere near the sun's position...

FTR all Nikon S3 cameras (including the reissue versions) have a cloth shutter. Except of course for the black "Olympic version" released in 1965 which has a titanium shutter. :)
