Hi Keith -- yeah, I saw your name on the list today -- I meant to mention it. Congrats! It's been a hectic day -- I got caught in the train problems during this morning's commute. I like your photo -- the person in the foreground is quite a character! I wish I had a gallery for generating $30 entry fees!

Hey Dan! You beat me to posting, and I didn't want to take over your party!
Yeah, a gallery that generates $30 entry fees would be grand! Oh wait, there is, Jen Bekman Gallery. The "Hey Hot Shot" photo competition. I read that she makes a pretty penny on that and portfolio reviews. Years ago I paid her for a portfolio review. She took my money and "lost" my appointment. When I presented her with my Paypal receipt, she had her secretary say she wasn't in and she wouldn't accept my phone calls.
When I do these paid juried shows, I am very particular who I will shell out money to. I have showed with PhotoPlace Gallery before. They are very legit and extremely nice. I had some problems with an image returning to me and they went out of their way to make sure everything was shipped correctly.

No worries about parties
That's funny!
Paid portfolio reviews are a vile scam. It's like a doctor paying the patient. However the PSPF in NYC, if you want to meet one or two people from specific galleries -- that one can be okay -- just really watch how you spend your money.
I've participated with the PhotoPlace before as well. Yes, they're nice. Never sold a photo with them -- what I do is tell them to destroy the photo because I don't want to pay for return shipping. It's kind of a double-edged sword
if they accept your work -- because then you're out the entry fee plus the cost of a print -- but okay, if you budget say $300 a year or so for these things, and choose carefully... and if you can do an inkjet ah-hem I mean archival pigment on your own printer -- then you get out for under $50 all-in. And they have their own frames - big bonus.
I figure, at least I'm putting a few images in front of some decent judges -- they seem to get good judges -- so who knows, maybe it could lead to something...

Yes, totally agree. I've had some shows in pretty out of the way places that lead to good things - sales and exhibits in established galleries. So yes, ya never know!
