Once more...earthquake in Chile

Well, once more earthquake in my country...

8.3 richter in the epicentre, some tsunamis have already hit some coast towns.

..and the earth keeps trembling...

I've been watching coverage on BBC and Al Jazeera, seems that perhaps severe destruction and casualties have been averted this time, very fortunate. So far I see reports of some coastal flooding, damaged buildings, some power outages and less than 10 confirmed deaths (so far). We'll see what the morning brings though, the true extent of the damage may not yet be reported. Our thoughts are with y'all. 🙁

I´m fine and today after darkness things are geting back to normal although there are at least 8 victims.

At least we are well prepared for these disasters.

I was just reading an article last night about how the subduction zone off the northwest coast of the US hasn't moved in eons, and how they have pieced together the record of movements and tsunamis through the spoken tales of the native peoples. They happened to use Chile's known record as an example of what the Northwest has to look forward to when the tectonic plates finally unlock.

My thoughts are with you and your country in these terrible times. Hoping the aftershocks are not too bad, or long lasting.

The last Tsunamis should hit the coast in about 3:15 more hours. These waves are not like the ones that you see in films they are 4 mtrs high and donñt hit all the coast just the ones oriented in a particular way, for instance you can have devastation in a north oriented beach and the one at the south won´t suffer anything.

The alarms worked efficiently and most of the people went to safe spots, Chile has lots of mountains and getting away from danger is relatively easy, thank god we have no places below sea level, "climbing up" to 30 mtrs which is the safe altitud is not difficult.

I´ve lived through 2 major earthquakes and many ones below 8 richter ...i must say is quite an "experience", the last one 8.8 Richter in 2010 was unveliebable...you could see clearly how the land made waves in the plains, terrifying...

My sister lives in Huasco, about a four hour drive north of the nearest land to the epicenter. In an email last night she said that she had evacuated to a community center and was waiting for officials to tell her when it was safe to return home.

The country is well prepared for earthquakes, houses and buildings are designed to endure them. People (especially the eldest) have a sort of "earthquake culture" and arrange things in their homes considering the possibility of a quake, they also know how to react and mantain basic things at hand (flashlight, portable radio receiver). But we have not developed a "tsunami culture" yet, these are somewhat new for us. The 2010 earthquake (and the following tsunami) taught us a big lesson and this time a lot of casualties were spared by timely evacuating to safe areas. We have yet to learn to avoid constructions on floodable coastal areas.

I've spent years in Chile and it's really a beautiful country - the quakes are a way of life however - I've literally seen the ground rolling and cracking in wave-like motions there before. Fortunately they do build rather strong there having learned from much past experience. Now I live in California (am I crazy or what). We had a little 4.5 here yesterday which occurred during the middle of a lecture I was giving. Overhead power point projectors it turns out make pretty good seismographs - my lecture slide was waving up and down for about 10 seconds - in fact exactly when I was discussing the concept of kinetic energy.
