my kid is teaching in NOLA (really, Jefferson Parish). my wife and I are thinking about another visit down there before our son bolts for a new job in Germany or China (wanderlust I guess; I'm just jealous of a 24-year old).

Hey rob, thanks for the comments.
We have not yet edited the singer's(in the images) sound so this music on this slideshow was from a royalty free website. I liked the feel of the song too.
I'm sure the teaching pays more in Jefferson than Orleans. I'm headed up to Jersey for the U2 show in July.

the kids he's teaching in Jeff Parish are bused out there from NO. rough bunch with many unfortunate stories (pregnant 7th graders, shootings as both trigger man and victim and other things that adults, let alone kids, shouldn't have to experience).

Hey, Red is my buddy!You know Red thinks you are OK when about 1AM he pulls out that bottle of "white whiskey" and pours you a drink. All on the house of course since he would never risk selling untaxed liquor. You have to stay with Rat at the Riverside inn to really appreciate Clarksdale. It is walking distance from Red's but through what may appear to be a sketchy neighborhood. Rat told me to just tell everyone that you are coming from Red's and staying with Rat and they won't f*** with you. And, I can swear it is true.
Ground Zero is OK, but after a while reminds me of Disney World (I was born and live in metro Orlando and know the difference)
But the really good place is Rosedale, back in the alley where everyone hangs out. Good people if you have a good perspective, don't mind drinking a few, or having a toke or two.
Betty Guetoe from Rosedale. She will be you escort around town. She appreciates another tall Steel Reserve malt liquor but it is only $1-
Or, see Rosevelt Dudley. He is a sharp dresser.

Oh yeah Bob, I was in Rosedale as well! Great place to photograph. Although it was raining like cats and dogs when I was there nontheless I still got out there and photographed! Would love to go back again sometime in the near future....

Wow, what a great thread. I spent my early years in NOLA and it still
affects me. Now I have to take a " blues vacation" in the delta to get that
feeling back to where it belongs, at the front of my rather limited brain.
A wonderful presentation of photographs and music. Only on RFF could we
have such a collection of expert commentary. Thank you, Pickett Wilson,
for your advice about visiting the area. Despite all of it's problems, America
remains a great country because of things like this....

Great shots. I love the delta. If you're back up by Clarksdale, ask around and find out how to get to Po Monkey's. You ain't seen nothin' until you've been to Po Monkey's.

Here is an image I made at Red's in Clarksdale, MS. I love the vibe of this place! I had just missed a 3 day Blues fest in Clarksdale, long story short the whole Pinetop Perkins band was staying at the hotel I was staying at. even ran into Pintop and Willie Big Eyes Smith stuck up a conversation with Willie and found out there was this after hours jam at Red's it was a crazy night! Willie showed up, but didn't play too bad!

When I went to Po Monkey's, I had to stop 4 times to ask directions. It was a lot of "Oh, turn on the second dirt road" Finally someone in a pickup just told me to follow them. It really is out in the middle of a cotton field in middle of no where.

Bob that was exactly my experience trying to get there! I think I drove down oh 3 or 4 dirt roads before I found the right one! What a drive that was, too bad I was there during the day and couldn't go inside. Man, If had I been trying to get there at night for get out it!

when in the Delta, never hesitate to stop in places that are closed. Just knock on the door if there is a car or truck around. Some of my most memorable times were with Red (Red's in Clarksdale) or with Willie Seaberry (a/k/a Po Monkey) sitting around one-on-one just shooting the sh*t. And you ain't never seen nothin' until you have seen a real juke joint that has not been cleaned up after a good night.
Also, if you want to know that is going on, stop in Cat Head Records in Clarksdale. Roger the owner also books talent and knows everything going on. You can frequently find Roger hanging out at Red's at night. But if LaLa (keyboard player for Super Chickan) is on duty at Cat Head, she will give you the real inside low down. You can trust her when she says to make a trip to hear someone.

the more I look at this thread, the more I want to hop in the car and make a road trip with time for lots of stops. I've driven from NJ to NOLA and back twice in the past two years, but have always been in rush (that plus a couple of trips by plane, which totally sucks). this images and places like red's and po' boy remind me I need slow down (I hope me wife reads this one).

Rob: If you wife if with you, spend the night in Clarksdale and stay at:
1) ShackUp Inn at Hobson Plantation. They have a small number of "reburbished" old cabins. Not really hokey as you might imagine. About one mile south of town.
2) Upstairs at the Ground Zero. Totally unlike what you might imagine from the club downstairs. Actually very nice rooms.
I would not hesitate to recommend either of those places for someone with a spouse who does not quite appreciate the ethnic type places that we might prefer. It is a crime to stay in a traditional franchise motel when those are around.
Of course if she is a real adventuresome sport, the Riverside Inn in Clarksdale is the place. It is as authentic as a juke joint. But some spouses freak out staying in a place with a communal bathroom down the hall.

Last time I was there was during the day. There were a couple of dozen kids from the college in Cleveland there with a back-hoe and a truck full of water. They dug a big ol' hole, filled it with water/mud and spent the day sloshing around in it. I don't remember the date, but they said they did it every year on that day.
