One of the best (funniest) things on photography

Great. He's right on the money, on every single one. People get too hung up on technical details (or so they think) and forget about the photograph.

My biggest pet peeve is the "distracting" comment. Some of these people can't look at more than one thing at once; I wonder if they enjoy polyphony in music, which wouldn't leave too much of it...

Bunch of mediocre pictures and quite accurate comment, if you ask me.. 😛

No kidding, some derive their only merit from the name in the caption. What's so great about Steichen's bog shot?

Between this story (posted a few days ago) and the exhumation of that flickr thread, HCB vs. DeleteMe, I've had a moment of personal reflection.

I remember when those critiques were mine. It was only a year or two ago. I've come so far since then.

The pop photo aesthetic is mired in heaps of dogma.

That was priceless. It was spot on. I particularly laughed out loud at the section where the "critic" tells us about all of is great equipment:

"George Spelvin [Nikon D200, Nikon D70s backup, 17-35 f/2.8, 80-200 f/2.8, 4GB Microdrive (2), Photoshop CS, Epson 2200]"

And the other guy recommending a fuji S3 because of it's dynamic range...

I would also recommend an S3. I Nikon S3 rangefinder, that is. ;-)

The best one is the HCB picture. "Your problem here is that your AF has focused on the wrong place..."

But I would say this, it is hard, (especially when you first start photographing, and even as time goes by) to not want tack sharp, perfectly exposed, compositionally perfect pictures. Give them a little slack. I am still frustrated by poor focus, bad composition, and just plain why-the-heck-did-I-take-that-picture syndrome. And then we learn that great pictures are more than that. If it grabs, it is great. We learn. So be kind, but not too kind. 😀

To see it in the "flesh". It doesn't reproduce well. It is really quite beautiful.

Agree. I saw it for real many years ago, but still recall it vividly. It is just full of very subtlely differentiated tones. Reproductions don't come close to showing what's there.

Though that thread was hilarious for all the wrong reasons, I too can't be bothered with most of HCB's shots. Most I find boring or just not interesting enough. But to dismiss a shot because "it was focused at the wrong spot" or because it's blurry, just seems odd. The saddest part, however, was that so few people recognised the shot of the cyclist.
