I was just reading about Joe's travails with Flickr. I've been interested in using some online photo repository... one that I could point people to when they want to see my images, but haven't done so yet. I used to think that I'd use Flickr, but now with its recent changes, it seems that's not the best way to go.

Do you have positive experience with other photo-posting sites? I'm looking for one that allows easy organization (and re-organization when I choose), relatively little limitation on the number of images I can post at one time, and doesn't charge more than say $100 a year. And a site that seems to be pretty stable: been around for awhile and not created upheaval along the way in their rules, fees, etc.. Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts. 🙂

tumblr. You can post large, high quality images, customise it to look/work however you want and it's free. I have no idea why people still use flickr.

I think Flickr is better than ever. Sure some things could always be improved, but you'll be hard put to find a better overall experience elsewhere.

+1 on Flickr, I have 2 accounts one main account that I use for sharing and posting my pictures and one 2nd account that is private that I use for backing up my pictures.

only downside with Flickr is that you can't create private/password protected albums.

Although I'm not so down on flickr as a lot of other people, I have continued to maintain my phase site (though I don't post frequently there.). A bit old fashioned looking now, but easy to organize. I don't post large images, so I'm happy with the $23 U.S. a year for 1000mb (I currently have used 324mb).
I find it's galleries easier to use and rearrange than flickr's. I also like the fact that your most recent photo or upload is not the one people necessarily see first.

Uploaded images are restricted to 75 posts per day, and files can be no larger than 10MB(?). If these work for you, then Tumblr should be fine.

I myself needed more, so I had to accept the fact that I had to pay for it. I've been with Zenfolio for a number of years. It works for me. I used to be with Smugmug--it was fine for a while until Zenfolio ramped up its features, caught up and eventually surpassed Smugmug.

Here's the link to the different zenfolio plans. IMO, the $60 Unlimited is probably the best deal, unless you plan to sell photos.

Good luck!!!

I've never understood the complaints about flickr.
A free terra and no size practical limit. It's for web sharing riggt? Who cares if the sharpen a bit and change the ui once in a while.
After years now I have never list an inage or had trouble calling them up.
I have a pay acct and several free ones.
Free accts are a great way to upload and share small images with clients when you have bulky files with a lot of frames.
They can leave comments and let you know what they want. Oh and... It's free. 😛

flickr is great except if there is a problem...they do not communicate, answer emails or give a rat's ass about the customer.

They do actually. With free accts the customer is the advertisers on the page.

I've had two questions ever with my pro acct and both were answered (still in my inbox).

Joe, you had a bad experience with your pro which sucks.
Maybe it's not the rule though. Flickr has 100,000,000 users 😛

Flickr exists long enough and it is still strong enough after changes in management team and outsourcing. They have good prices and capacity.

But if you want your photos to be really organized, I don't think where are any providers to do it properly. Do it offline, get it copied on-line for redundancy.

Thanks everyone for all the REALLY great info (I LOVE RFF!). I'm going to check out all these recommendations in the next couple of days and see what sites offer what kind of organization features. I forgot to say that being able to easily organize and reorganize my images is important to me.

For you Flickr users: I've heard from time to time complaints (I have no idea if they're well-founded) that Flickr automatically readjusts incoming images (sharpness, saturation, etc.). Is that your experience? I'm pretty sure that would bug the h*ll out of me.

Thanks again for your responses.

Hi Jamie

This image is from my x100. It was a jpeg auto synced from an eyefi card.
Sharpening in camera set to normal, Jpeg fine, f4. No adjustments etc...
Follow the link back and look at the full size.

Sometime flickr links look oversharpended and over saturated. Other times they look fine.
My discovery is... when sharing, one has less control of everyone elses monitor settings so why not only worry about your own?

I thought I had sent my opinion on this but apparently not. I have been on Photo.net for several years and totally happy with it. I got on a site called 500px a little while ago and it seems to be pretty good too. Photo.net is $25 a year for unlimited storage and 500px is free so far, there are upgrade that cost something about the same. 500px will let you sell your picture too at the free level.
