Can someone recommend a good site to have a portfolio online? I trird better photo but did not like the limitations. I would like to try something which lets you have a little creativity on the site and not pay an arm and a leg.

Thanks,

Why don't you do your own website. You can make it look exactly how you want, it looks more professional, and the cost is low ($10 or so a month for hosting).
Hi CHris: Do you have any recommendations? I just did a quick search and came up with a bunch of Flash templates for free or cheap, but you still need to know html, xml, css, etc. and it helps if you have Dreamweaver or something similar to edit.

This also looks interesting, and on brief examination I don't see any demand for payment in body parts.

I don't have any recommendations for templates, I've always designed websites from scratch. I have dreamweaver and I do websites professionally. If you get software like Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Web you don't need to know any coding languages. I do know CSS, HTML, and some Coldfusion but you really don't have to know any of that to use most web design software. It is actually a lot easier than it looks, and you can start be designing something simple then changing it later to something fancier as you learn more. I don't like templates because you have a site that looks like lots of other people's sites.

I like zenfolio. I think it's around $45 a year for unlimited storage.
I have a referral code if you want to use it. I think there's some kind of discount that way.

I don't think you should try making your own site unless you have a lot of experience or are willing to spend a lot of time and effort on it.

Smugmug is nice and they're great folks. Zenfolio's templates are even better in my opinion. I've been using PhotoShelter recently and like both the control panel and the gallery options. PhotoShelter is the most expensive of the bunch, though.

punkromance,

How has Deviantart been? Have you sold anything on it?

Honestly? I loathe it.
It was nice enough when I joined when I was 16, and hadn't even started photography, but now I hate it. It's 70% 13 year olds drawing anime characters, and it can get tedious wading through it all to find something you like. But like I said, I've kind of established myself there now and I can't be bothered to move everything to somewhere else.
I have a flickr which I use occasionally, but to be honest I prefer deviantart's anime to flickr's horrible HDRs and "YOU'VE BEEN INVITED TO THE LITTLE GIRLS DRINKING TEA AT 4.32PM AND PRETTY FLOWERS GROUP"

Never tried to sell anything. People request for my photos to be made as prints but I'm not comfortable taking money for things like that.

23 bucks a year for 500mb (I think) of storage, no traffic charges, and you can design your own CSS to make your gallery look the way you like (within limits).

Hey I know you!

Yeah. I was initially reluctant to post anything on DeviantArt. But just grew to post my stuff there.Especially when I found out you can block downloads. And I only post small res 72dpi files. And it's more of my own personal blog and record of my life/work rather than a portfolio I show people. I have my own separate site for that.

But I think DA has a better aesthetic and you don't get all those crappy "omg you're a photographer. I'm a photographer too." sort of messages that I had with flickr. Most people on DA delve into other forms of art. Which I like. The one annoyance is don't ever post a nude or you'll get some weirdo who collects nudes favouriting your stuff and thinking that's all you do.

As for a website. I have a Foliolink account. And honestly the only reason I have one is because when I quit my staff job in Milwaukee and started looking for new work, every other job I applied to wanted to see an online portfolio. So I decided I needed one. And I really wanted a cliqbook account. But could not for the life of me remember the name of the company. I think their layouts are great. But it is a large initial investment. About $800 or so. Foliolink, which is the service I use now is a bit cheaper. But it's still a bit of cash to get started. And about $600 annually.

The truth is, for the start up cost of these cookie cutter ready to publish portfolio services. You can probably hire a good web designer to create something personal just for you.

+1 for zenfolio. Nice simple layouts, easy to use, affordable. Sure, Smugmug is more customizable and powerful but I wanted something simple so I chose zenfolio. Happy customer so far...

I highly recommend Zenfolio and I have the $100 package. It's expensive. So, here's my referral code so all of us can get $5 off.

I've always wanted to play around with the color option and I'm patriotic! Now, if only I can find a flag symbol? :bang:
