Only the top half of the thumbnails show with my 2017 iMac, running Mojave

The thumbnails we click on, at the top of the screen, to see member's photos. On my Macbook Pro, running Sierra; and on my previous iMac (Snow leopard); I could see the whole thumbnail, top to bottom. But on this iMac 2017 it only shows the top half of the thumbnails. Once I click on a thumbnail, then I can see the whole image.

I dragged this heavy 27" iMac back to the store to show them this. They brought up RFF on their store monitors and got the same result! They didn't really know what to say; they murmured something about newer aspect ratios. But really, they are all 16:9 machines, and have been, all along . . .

A possible clue might be that when RFF loads on my Macbook Pro, I can see that the top halves of the thumbnails load first; a split second later, I see the lower half shows up. It's as if my iMac--and apparently theirs, too--won't accept the second half of that loading process (?)

How do the thumbnails look on relatively newer iMacs? Any ideas how to fix?

Are you using the Safari browser? That may be the problem. I see maybe 7/8ths of the image in Safari (Version 18.1) but 100% in Firefox.

I am on an iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 macOS Ventura 13.7.1. Mohave is an older macOS (10.x.x) but I think it may be your browser behavior.

When I fire-up my work laptop soon (MacBook Pro running the latest macOS Sequoia 15.x.x and latest version of Safari), I will check there as well.

Try another browser if you have one installed.

I'm getting the same when I first load RFF:

This is with a 2017 Macbook Air, OS12.7.6, in Min (a new open-source browser: Min | A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy), but I've seen this happen in all other browsers I've used of late (notably both Vivaldi and Firefox, which means it's not an issue with one specific rendering engine).

Here's how it looks in Firefox when I'm not signed in (so it's not a per-account issue, either):

A strange one indeed.

My two MacBook Air laptops (both 2017 models) do the same, intermittently.

Usually I log out, log in again, and boom! the problem is gone. I get full images.

Others have this issue, so obviously it isn't to do with me. Relief on that.

One of those truly strange conundrums of today's increasingly crazy world.

I get the cut off thumbnails with safari, and with google chrome. I haven't tried other browsers.

A thought: it's far more likely to be an issue with the viewport sizing and a bit of responsive CSS not operating correctly than it is specific operating systems or browsers.

My Macbook Air is a 13" model and I almost always have the browser set to the full window, resulting in a 1376px wide viewport, according to Min. I'm wiling to be the people not seeing issues are using larger displays and much larger viewports as a result.

What is "responsive CSS?" Does viewport size mean screen size? I get cut-off thumbnails with my 27" iMac and my 13" Macbook Pro; but my 15" Macbook Pro shows them correctly. I don't think screen size is the problem.

CSS = cascading style sheets. It's one of four or five different things that go together to build a website (HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, plus some newer stuff I'm not that familiar with). The viewport is the usable/visible area of the webpage.

If you open the average modern website on your desktop or laptop computer, resize the browser window, and everything on the website moves around, that's usually done with CSS. Often it'll be a line of code that is basically saying "if the viewport is more than X wide, put this here, that thing below it, and make them both take up Y width". There's a couple of different ways of doing it, but when you consider the huge amount of different devices and screens that all access websites now, it's not uncommon for your chosen method to not look ideal in one or two specific viewport dimensions.

Things were much easier when (nearly) everything that accessed the internet had a 1280 x 720 display size... or, even earlier, 800 x 600. You didn't even bother with responsive design - hell, I don't even think it existed! - you just put a note at the top that said "this page best viewed with a resolution of..." and left it at that!
 
Ah! Here's an observation: going back to the front page, and the images are displayed correctly:

Same browser and same device as before (13" Macbook Air, Min browser). But notice these are three landscape images, not two landscape and a portrait one as in my last screenshot.

My guess is that the code for the layout is forcing the three combined images to take up 100% of the horizontal space allotted to the random pics section, but every so often (such as with two landscape images and one skinny portrait one), it's not calculating the height that's needed correctly - or something's interrupting that process.

If you refresh the front page a few times, you'll notice that it opens that section with a set height (which matches the height given to it in my screenshot in comment #4), and only when the third image appears, the section increases in height to accommodate the images correctly. Something's obviously going wrong in that step.
 
So, does anyone know of a browser with which the thumbnails load correctly? It looks to me like the problem is within RFF itself. Some glitch that has emerged. It's a problem in that we can't tell at a glance which ones we want to see. It's a real problem for me, because viewing photos of other members are an important part of my day.

Could this be looked into? Moderators? Tech-savvy engineers at RFF?

I understand your point about a portrait image possibly causing the cutting off; but I refreshed until I got a set of three landscapes. They were still cut off.
